Maternal antibiotics and baby wind

Has anyone else had their newborn (mine's 2 months nearly) have a strange reaction to you going on antibiotics? I've got mastitis and he's now really restless and windy (or in pain for some reason) after feeds. No runny bum as promised yet but maybe that's to come. I'm going to try infacol but don't believe that's any good really. Will it all calm down when I finish the course? If so, it's gonna be a long week....

Yes I had this. I took 5 weeks of antibiotics in total after labour & DS has tummy trouble with some of them. I recommend a probiotic to avoid thrush. You can get baby probiotic too which I have DS. BFing over time should naturally restore the flora anyway.

Congrats on the baby & sorry about the mastitis. I had it two weeks in & it was awful.

Yes. I was on 3 different IV anti-biotics for infective mastitis for 5 days followed by 10 days of 3 more oral anti-biotics. It made LO very ill - her bloods concerned the paediatrician with particularly low potassium and sodium. She had very bad wind and very runny stools - almost just water. I gave up bf.

I was on a few courses of anti-b's after DD was born and although it didn't make her ill she just went right off my milk. Apparently they can make it taste bitter. Was a real struggle not to turn to formula but stuck at it. Yet another course just before she was 6 months and I gave up

Just to add infacol made no difference but it calmed down almost immediately for us once I finished the course. Had antibiotics since & had the same thing. Still BFing now though at 7 months

This is interesting. I'm on long-term antibiotics as I'm immuno-deficient and DC2 is a very windy baby. I'd never heard of antibiotics having this effect so will do some digging.

Thank you all so much for your replies- been horrid week so didn't get back earlier. Sorry some of you had to quit bf, must have been tough. Yes I'm finding him v v windy. Glad that this is normal though and will stick it out.

DD has had hideous wind this week as i have been taking flucloxacillin for mastitis. Had it before and she wasn't obviously affected by them but i think that was because she was only two weeks oldtthat time and therefore so screamy and farty anyway that i didn't really notice
