How soon did you use a dummy with your little ones?

...if you did at all? I think with my first it was around 2-3 weeks and just to help her to sleep so she wasn't using me as the dummy and making me very sore! But everyone has such differing views on it.

Within a week or so with DS1, and within a couple of days with DS2 and DD. My children were permanently attached to my nipples (comfort sucking I assume) and it got into a vicious cycle of amazing pain and soreness. I'd rather they had the dummies than have to give up breast feeding, and it worked for us. I did get told off by a very officious midwife with DD, but she was my third and by then I was more than happy to stand my own ground.

Also I'm 40+ and still suck my thumb when I'm tired (I've given up trying to stop now, I'll succeed for a bit and then it'll creep back in all by itself) I can (and did) take dummies away; it's harder with thumbs...

2 weeks here as I was being used as a full time dummy. I did let him comfort suck when he wanted to, I took the nipple out and put the dummy in when he was fast asleep. Now at 6 months I am trying to feed him to sleep without putting the dummy in, with some slow success, as I want him to be off dummies by his birthday.

Ds2 is 13w and refuses to take one even though I have tried on many occasions, he iscdef going to be a thumb/finger sucker and as MrsD states, it's easier to get rid of a dummy than a hand so will try again!

Ds1 was 5 days, but that was because he was very poorly but no hcp picked up on it and sucking helped him with the pain :o(

That should have been :(

Didn't with DD1. DD2 was 9 weeks premature, and was given a dummy by hospital midwife staff when transferring from being tube fed to being fed by me. It helped her to learn to how to suck. we didn't need one by the time she came home, which was at 7/8 weeks old.

DD1: 2 days old. She loved it and has found it very soothing. Weaned her off it during the day at 2.6yo. She's now 3.8yo and I will wean her off night nummies before her 4th birthday (would like to have done it by now but she had a new sister in April and started nursery in September. Lots of changes for her to deal with).

DD2: 3 days old (now 6 mo). She enjoys it, but not as much as DD1. Shell often spit it out and seems to only really want it when going off to sleep.

Thanks for everyone's replies! Well, I've sterilised one and may use it tonight, but will see. Might help her to sleep in Moses basket instead of on me!
