Painful feeding post tongue tie and refusing bottle

Hoping someone can help not sure what else to try.

Baby is 9 weeks today and breat feeding has never been comfortable. I have been to see a never if breastfeeding support groups who all said latch was good and Doc diagnosed thrush for my pain!

Two weeks ago one midwife suggested tongue tie. And saw specialist who cut it last week. She now moves her tongue more but still painful most of the time. Not sure what else to try. The pain is beginning to really get to me!

We have also been trying to give her a bottle for last 5 weeks and have tried a number of teats! But the most she has ever taken in 1oz.

Any one any suggestions on how we can improve the situation?

See a lactation consultant? Try a lactaid if weight gain an issue and won't take bottle?

There is a really good tongue tie support group on facebook.

Snipping the tongue tie is rarely enough on it's own, you need to follow it up with bodywork and work with a lactation consultant to help your baby learn how to suck properly.

What type of tie was it? Were you advised to do any stretches after the snip? If not, and if it was a posterior tie, there's the possibility that it may have reattached.

DD had her tongue tie snipped today and I was about to post asking how to teach her to feed properly rather than latching on with her gums. What do you mean by bodywork, mawbroon?

mawbroon · 15/10/2012 21:02

Facebook Tongue Tied Babies Support Group. It's a closed group but you just ask to join and wait until the admins approve you.

By bodywork, I mean something like Cranial Osteopathy or Cranial Sacral Therapy

Had first cranial osteopathy session today. Hopefully dimething makes a difference soon. I also saw breast feeding specialist who said not a lot they can do till she opens we mouth in the right way and uses her tongue more. And to encourage her to stick it out as much as possible.

Thanks mawbroon and McBaby. I've asked to join the FB group and will look into cranial osteopathy. And good luck to you and your DD, McBaby.

another vote for bodywork also maybe try a change of position? I found biological nurturing position/laid back feeding www.biologicalnurturing.com really useful in getting a better latch after division and also exaggerated latch techniqueswww.pumpstation.com/pumpstation/dept.asp?dept_id=3228

The BF counsellor told me to try biological nurturing but DD and I couldn't manage it at all. It seems to assume that when you lie back your nipples must be pointing up/forwards, but mine are flopping off to the side! The exaggerated latch could work though.
