how do i get DD to drink from anything that is not my boobs???

i am at my wits end with this. DD is nearly 9 months old and refuses to drink from any kind of cup. she has always refused bottles so i gave up with them ages ago. but i need to get her to drink from cups. she is wanting about 4 feeds a day now and surely she much need more fluid from somewhere??

she seems to dislike all the types of cup i have tried (NUK soft spout, TT hard spouts). she just chews wants to chew the spouts and doesn't understand that they for drinking. i have tried water and baby juice, all of which she spits out!

help, what can i do to make her understand that she needs to drink from something other than my boobs?! any advice appreciated as always :) x

have you tried an open cup or a cup with a straw?

Yup, I'd ditch trying the sippy cups and go for a Doidy cup. My 10 month old DD never understood the spout cups either and now she just drinks from either a Doidy or normal cups.

Try a doidy cup. Practice using it in the bath until she's got the hang then she can have water with her meals. Much better for her teeth to drink from an open cup anyway.

You can buy them from some childrens centre or from the biccie pegs website.

I didnt like the doidy cup. If you have tommee tippee cups with spouts then just take the lid off and voila, an open cup with no need to fork out on another cup.

we used the TT first cup with the lid on to start with and then with the lid off as an open cup

you also need to pick one cup and just keep trying. and just stock with water no juice at this age.

don't worry to much about the fluids they don't really need any extra at this age if you are still breastfeeding.

ah yes, i've heard of the doidy cups. will try one of them, hopefully she'll take to it better than a sippy cup!

haven't tried a straw but we have one of those TT first cup things and she doesn't like it. she blows on the spout and makes it all squirt in her face! tried it as an open cup but she didn't know what was going on... it was a while ago though, might try again now that she's a bit older.

My dd was like this. We had limited success with the doidy cup, but she didn't really get the idea of drinking water until she was about 13 months. At one point she was just having 1 bf a day and no other drinks. The health visitor advised that she'd drink if she was thirsty, and just to give her lots of juicy fruit etc - they get a surprising amount of fluids from food. One day it just clicked and she'll now happily drink water from an open cup or a tommee tippee one with the lid on. I know it's alarming when they refuse to drink, but a baby won't allow itself to dehydrate, so try not to worry!

having gone through something similar (we are the proud owners of 6 different cups, beakers, etc) the tt tip and sip (soft spout ) was the only success
