Is it common for one boob to make more milk?

Hi, my DD is 4 weeks and feeding well (thanks to colic cluster feeding we have plenty of practice!) - not a problem but just notice my right boob gets much bigger and fuller than the left when they are given time off. Looks bigger. Not a big boobed lass so still not bothering with bras (or breast pads - they really dont make them for the small boobed do they) but they look slightly different sizes to me...cant recall if that was always the case...I keep making sure I alternate ....just wondered if this was common?

this rings a bell, i had huge boobs but always remember being able to express more from one than other, been a while but think pretty normal, probably 1 got more milk ducts than other after all they are not perfectly symmetrical, well most peoples aren't I'm sure.

candytuft63 · 06/09/2012 00:49

In a word - yes. Are you right-handed ? If so, your right breast will be slightly larger than the left and will therefore have more milk ducts. It just wont have been as obvious as before.

IHeartWispas · 06/09/2012 00:55

Yes, I think it is and I think its normal for the baby to start favouring that boob too, happened with both of mine.

Happybunny12 · 06/09/2012 01:02

I have a three week old and exactly to same issue, although it's really quite noticeable with mine. Interesting point on right-handed-ness, I thought it was just that I'd subconsciously favoured the bio it is easier to position DC for. Interested to hear what others say. Breast pads: have you tried Johnsons ones? They're not that big, about 7cm diameter.

Happybunny12 · 06/09/2012 01:02

Bio= boob

ZuleikaD · 06/09/2012 06:32

Yes, I noticed this with DC1 and with DC2 tried to compensate by feeding more with the smaller one (it didn't seem to produce any less, was just smaller) to try and 'balance' them a bit. Didn't work! And after I'd finished feeding the smaller one was in worse shape.

SummerSolstice · 06/09/2012 06:57

Definitely and it's the one I feel most comfortable feeding from. It's the left and I am right-handed do must be an exception.

McPhee · 06/09/2012 07:00

My left boob puts my right boob to shame Grin

Mandinga79 · 06/09/2012 12:34

My right boob produces two to three times more than the left, lets down like a fire hydrant and is consistently, for the first time in my life, bigger than the other. However DS has always preferred feeding, and attaches better, on the left so I don't know if this is just an indication that he empties that one better. Whatever it is, I share your lopsidedness Smile

Startailoforangeandgold · 06/09/2012 12:38

Yes, DD2 had a strong preference for my right breast (right handed).

Ilovedaintynuts · 06/09/2012 12:41

Yes, my right boob could have fed twins Smile

GroupieGirl · 06/09/2012 12:43

I had a pierced left nipple which left some scar tissue and therefor impeded flow (tmi?) I'd always assumed that my disproportionally large right breast was down to this...?

Declutterbug · 06/09/2012 12:45

In my experience, in the early weeks the larger one is often the one that the baby actually drains less effectively and therefore stays fuller, despite the common perception that it is the 'better' boob.

Spirael · 06/09/2012 12:49

My left side was larger (still is...) and was the better milk producer when I was BFing DD. I don't think the size difference is particularly noticeable to anyone other than me, though.

Interesting about it being related to your dominant hand. For the stats, I'm right hand dominant but relatively ambidextrous. However I'm left eye dominant, just to throw in a new theory??

SquidgersMummy · 06/09/2012 14:31

My right boob is bigger but left handed!

CommanderShepard · 06/09/2012 18:59

Me too squidgers! But the Commanderling prefers the left.

StrawberryMojito · 06/09/2012 19:02

My left boob was rubbish, right boob did all the hard work.

NotQuiteCockney · 06/09/2012 20:28

This is very normal. Not sure about any connection with handedness, but most women find one breast makes more milk than the other. It's generally (but not always) the breast that is bigger, pre-pregnancy.

JeuxDEnfants · 06/09/2012 20:29

Yes

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 07/09/2012 12:20

Mine is my right for DS2, but was left for DS1. He seems to be left-handed (23m), wonder if thats why...?

psychedelic1 · 07/09/2012 14:26

I notice this too...my left gets bigger and I can get much more from that side when expressing as well. I am not sure if I sometimes favour that side though as I am right handed and if I feed from the left I have my right hand free to do stuff (like type on here!).

As an aside OP, I am so happy to read about another person bf who doesn't need to wear a bra or breast pads! I thought I was the only one! I have never leaked and my boobs are small and not floppy so I don't need a bra either!
