Is it normal for gripey belly in 3 wk old before poo??

Hi all,

I am breastfeeding my 3 week old - its going well latch and weight gain wise (sore nips and my tits constantly being out aside!) but it seems like my DD gets very gripey before a poo. She's an easy baby but in the lead up to a poo gets upset and hard to settle - kind of seems like it hurts and it takes her a long time to push it out - then she's fine. On a cluster feed day it gets hard as she gets more gripey, sucks to soothe herself, needs to poo more. Am I missing something here or is this all normal??

Many thanks!

All normal. Dd1 was the same. I used to massage her tummy gently, which eased it a bit for her.

A lot of babies are the same I think.

My 3 week old does this too. I feel so sorry for her as she looks like she is in a lot of pain :( and also sucks for comfort bless them. I just rub her tummy until it passes. Sometimes it could last for 20 mins and she still doesn't go.

Yes it is normal and a tummy rub really helps them.

Thanks all - who would think a runny poo was so hard to pass! She reminds me of me having contractions!
