To ask what a 5mo formula fed baby drinks in 24hrs

Hi, I'm moving from EBF to FF with my nearly 5mo DD. The thing is having only ever BF on demand I have absolutely no idea how much she drinks in a day! I replaced her lunchtime feed with a bottle today and she seemed to want more after 5oz. The box recommends 30oz for 3-5mo but this seems like a huge amount!

Anyway if you have a similar aged child (or can remember when you did) then how much and when did you feed them. Also, should I feed water too? DD was born small and is now approx. 14lbs. Thanks!

I have just started giving my 5month old ds 1 bottle a day. He easily takes 7oz.

Friends with similar age ff babies are giving anything between 6 and 9+ oz!

thanks notwoo, I will definitely make up a larger bottle for tomorrow. However, I am planning a quick transition from EBF to fully FF and wondered what other fully FF babies have throughout the day. DD will be with CM full-time in 1.5 weeks so I just want to have a bit of a FF routine in place by then. Any advice appreciated Smile.

At 5 months DD was on 5 or 6 oz bottles but every baby is different. My friends 8 week old is on 5oz already! I went by the rule that if she drained consecutive bottles over 2 days I upped the oz. She is 7 months now and only takes 3 x 6oz bottles a day, thats dropped down from 5 x 7oz just a few weeks ago!

thanks booksandchoc, what about water? Did you feed water too at that age?

At 5 months, my fully FF baby was taking 5 x 9oz feeds in 24 hrs, plus a bit of water. Started weaning her around then as milk just wasn't enough for her! Hope that helps!

booksandchoc · 22/08/2012 23:11

A little bit if it was warm but she wasn't really interested in it tbh. She does drink more now that she is weaning. Have been trying to get her to drink water out of a sippy cup but she just chews the tip so I'm having to give her a bottle because it is so warm just now and she has cut right back on her milk.

I should have said, those were her feed during the day as she had no night feeds at all at that age (was lucky, she slept though 7 till 7 from 12 wks!)

Thanks MrsApplepants I'm kind of hoping a more routine-like feeding pattern will encourage my DD into sleeping through. My DD is a little and often feeder during the day, but she only wakes twice at nights for feeds (8pm til' 8am) and I feel lucky with that! Small as she is, she is already showing great interest when DP, DS and I eat, although I think that is more down to teething than actually needing or wanting real food.

Ds is 5 months today and he has 7-8oz every 3 hours starting from 7.30am then his last at 7.30pm. Somtimes he doesn't finish a full 8oz bottle, sometimes he does so I make it up to 8oz every time.
