Hi,

I am on day 27 of breastfeeding so 4 weeks tomorrow, we have exclusively bf apart from day 8 ds had formula from about 8pm till 11am the next day.

This morning though I am bleeding. Could this be my first period? I thought ebf prevented periods from returning? Does this also mean my fertility has returned?

My periods returned when DD was 5 weeks old, despite breastfeeding round the clock. I breastfed until she was a year, periods regular as clockwork. I took this to mean I was fertile and sorted contraception asap. HTH

Thanks dozens, I was looking forward to another 6-12 months period free, I am very disappointed now!
I am having a coil fitted in 2 weeks, will be super careful until then.

Sadly periods can return early, even with EBF. Mine came back at six and 8 months respectively. With my second child she had literally only just started on solids, not dropped any feeds, etc.

I knew it happened to some people that they returned early, I just thought it was quite rare.

Thanks for the reply ribena.

Had your lochia completely stopped? It could be a period (in which case, bad luck!) but it could also be a re-start of post-partum bleeding. This can happen if you've been more active than previous. You can continue getting lochia bleeding for 6-8 weeks after birth, so perhaps it's that?

Rachog · 12/08/2012 19:04

Oh it could be Mumbo, possibly tmi but it was only when dp and I were doing the deed, he has blood on his penis, there hasn't been any since.

YY it's probably still the lochia.

Rachog · 12/08/2012 20:22

Oh that would be a relief. We will still be super careful until the coil is fitted just incase and see what happens.

Watching this with interest. DD2 is 5 weeks and I thought lochs had stopped around 10 days but have bled for about 24-36 hours every few days since. I am ebf but with DD1 no bleeding til periods returned at 10 months after lochs stopped. I hope mombo is right.

Missingmymarbles, so far I had a trickle last night and a bit today, not even enough to fill a pantyliner. Sorry tmi! How will we know if it is a period or lochia? If it goes away and comes back next month?
