Have just given up bf - should boobs still be hurting this much?

Haven't breastfed for about five days. Followed advice and dropped a feed every other day but my boobs are now rock hard, a bit lumpy and really sore. Have massaged them a bit with cream but it's so bad that they hurt to sleep on. Is there something that I should be doing - don't remember them being this bad first tim

How long did you feed for?

I remember that I gradually cut down, as advised, but can still remember the pain when I finally stopped. It was short lived if I remember, only a few days... but I was so tempted to express a bit for some relief!
I think if you had mastitis or something you get a temperature also... so probably is just the normal pain we all get! I hope it feels better soon and be prepared for the pain of your first period after stopping bf! Oh the joys of motherhood!

When I stopped BF my DS I dropped a feed a week but despite this it still took a couple of weeks for my boobs to return to normal. I had BF him for about 10months.

I chilled some cabbage leaves in the fridge and popped these in my bra for a bit of relief Smile. Didn't smell too good but the cooling effect gave a bit of short-term relief.

yes, that sounds familiar. it didn't hurt with dd, but with her she cut down over thespace of a couple of months, and gradually had less and less on the one feed she still had. it hurt like hell with ds, who did not cut down. like you i cut a feed every other day - think it needs to be every week or less often.
