Hi. My DS is 13 weeks old and yesterday he did not eat all day. he is normally on a 2 hours -2.5 hours eating. during the night he had some nibble at the breast every 2-3 hours. this morning he had a green poo and a ruttling nose - stuffed? he sucks on a dummy though so do not undestandwhy he finds it hard to suck on a breast - it seems he wants to suck but cannot because of stuffed nose? how shall I feed him?

Does he have a fever? Is he still having wet nappies?

You can try steam and saline spray up his nose. However, if he's sucking a dummy I'd be inclined to think he has no appetite and that would worry me in a baby so young. I'd probably get him seen by the GP I think.

thanjs for a prompt reply. no temperature, not many wet nappies - yesterday from 10 am till 4.00 pm the same nappy.

You need to get him checked. He could be dehydrated - is his fontanelle sunken?

Purplehonesty · 07/08/2012 08:39

I fed ds breastmilk from a teaspoon when he was that age and suffering from a cold. He lapped it up after refusing all feeds for a day. I took him to the doc who as usual wasnt interested that he wasn't feeding Hmm

Kellymom has some good advice here

my DD is currently finding it hard to feed due to a cold but its very obvious that she wants to feed as she latches on, sucks for a bit, then comes off to take a breath and then goes back on again. i'm relying on saline sprays to help!

however if your LO has gone over 12 hours with no milk i would take him to emergency docs or A&E. when my DD had tonsillitis she didn't feed for a whole day due her being in so much pain. they ended up admitting her to hosp as she wouldn't feed and had a fever. all she needed was antibiotics and paracetamol but it's worth getting them checked out, just to be sure.

worryingwillow, his fontanelle is OK - not sunken. my LO had a feed at about 8.30 am and then at 12.45 - it is quite an unusual gap for him, but I shall see how it goes later and let you know.

the baby has got temperature 36.8 - shall I give him paracetamol?

worryingwillow · 07/08/2012 18:24

36.8 isn't a temperature?

musicmusic · 07/08/2012 18:40

y.my mum said if temperature is below 37.00 - then it is OK and baby does not need paracetamol...?

Normal body temperature is 36.5-37.2 so no need for paracetamol. I wouldnt give anything for a low grade fever (37.2-38) unless they were uncomfortable with it.
