Sterilising bottles - need urgent advice

ImissMiniPop · 22/07/2012 19:16

I have stupidly left my Milton cold steriliser at my sister's. I need to sterilise bottles, any alternative suggestions?

Can I put 5litres of water & Milton in a big bowl and use that instead?

I have a steam steriliser, but it's a Philips one not NUK (make of bottles I have).

Arrrgggh! I am such an idiot.

My little one was born at 30 weeks, spent 6 weeks in NICU, he has been home for 2 weeks & is 38 weeks old
which is why I am panicking about the steriliser.

All advice very welcome.

Boil them?

BlackOutTheSun · 22/07/2012 19:17

you could use the water in a bowl, don't the bottles fit in the steam one?

missnevermind · 22/07/2012 19:18

Can you not fit a couple of the bottles in the steriliser.
Give them a jiggle and make them fit? 2 instead of 4/6.

But yes to the big bowl.

Is it breast milk or formula

Breast milk needs no sterilising

A bowl of Milton made up as per instructions in a bowl should be fine (bottles to be submerged)

Dishwasher then boiling water to rinse.

If the bottles fit the steam steriliser, use that. Doesn't matter what make it is.
Or use milton tablet/mix in water in a bowl, using the right concentration and leave for 30 mins ( this is what we do away from home).

I will check and see if the bottles fit, good point!

It's formula and breast milk, he's not quite breastfeeding properly which is a shame as I wouldn't have this panic if he was..

Thanks for tips everyone.

will have to try extra hard to get him to take the boob :)

Do you have a pressure cooker? Or a big saucepan with a lid would do.

You would need to stand the bottles on something (like a trivet) if they're plastic (I melted the side of one of my pump bottles by not doing that Sad).

I put in about 400ml of water and once the steam starts (obvious on a pressure cooker, but just boiling in a normal saucepan I guess) I time for 5 mins.

Or a makeshift microwave steriliser? After all, mine is basically a normal Tupperware box with a hole in the top - 100ml water, 4 mins.

Nuk bottles definatelty fit in a philips steriliser, I use Nuk with my Avent steriliser.
Or yes just a large bowl of milton solution, put a plate on it to push the bottles under the water.

ImissMiniPop · 22/07/2012 22:12

Thanks so much everyone, NUK bottles in the Avent steam steriliser and the standby bottles in the bowl of milton with plate.
