, my baby is bf and he has not had poo for 3 days - is it normal?

Yes as long as poo is still soft yellow then breastfed babys can go upto 10 days without pooing. It's also normal for there pooing habits to change with age.

Warning though there could be a lot of poo when he does go.

PukeCatcher · 01/07/2012 22:19

Mine used to do one a week at that age ... One bloody big one!
Then we went up to two, then three then four a week. Now at 18 weeks we seem to be back to two.
You think you know what's going on with them, then they throw you a curve ball and it all changes.
Strangely, I think I preferred 'big poo day' to lots of little ones, I knew where I was with that and could plan around it!

totally normal for a non-weaned breastfed baby after the first six weeks. Mine actually changed his poo pattern by four weeks although this turned out to be not a cause for concern. I'd say we get poo on two days in the week, although when it does come it is a proper poonami and often involves the sacrifice of a vest. Apparently some bf babies do loads of little poos and some save it all up. Will probably continue like this until solids are introduced. but definitely nothing to worry about until a week is up and so long as the poo is normal looking when it comes.

My DS is 12 weeks on Weds and has just had a poo; his first for 3 days. Tis normal, although there was rather a lot. You may want to prepare for a ginormous amount when it comes Wink

My 10 week old is about a million 10 poop a day boy like his big brother was.

I sometimes think I'd like an every few days pooper, but then I think about the poonamis.... Shock

Babylon1 · 02/07/2012 14:38

We also have poonamis here! DS is 9 weeks and EBF, and generally goes 2-3 times a week max, but always at stupid o clock in the morning and always a MASSIVE amount!

So far I've ruined 2 bedsets and countless vests/pjs as I've tried to change him through bleary eyes!!!

Babylon try washing at 60 and then putting them out to dry on a very sunny day. it'll bleach the poo stains right out,I use cloth nappies and not one of my nappies has a stain I've not managed to get out.

My 10 week old just went 7 days with no poo after being v regular 1-2 a day. It was disconcerting and I did get her tummy checked by HV as she has an umbilical hernia but was told 7-10 day gaps are within normal variation for breastfed babies. Today we've had more poo than normal - think it'll be variable for a bit and then maybe settle into new pattern.

jaggythistle · 04/07/2012 07:32

that's quite nice that your HV reassured you - pretty sure the ones here would be advising prune juice or orange juice or something...Hmm

My 7week old has recently changed her pooing habits. Due to problems breast feeding initially I was topping up with formula but have managed to get my milk supply up and she is now exclusively breast fed. Since coming off the formula, her poo frequency has gone from every day to once every few days. We're currently at 6 days since the last poonami which is the longest she's gone. I've asked the hv and several different midwives at the bf clinic I've been attending and they've all said not to worry but it is quite disconcerting. Has anyone else gone this long?

Babylon1 · 19/07/2012 04:13

I think our longest was 8 days and then an almighty pooh explosion!!

Our biggest problem is the wind that ds emits, it smells AWFUL Blush really bad!!
And he has no shame either Blush Rather embarrassing at times Grin
