Breastfeeding & Weightwatchers - anyone done it?

I need to lose some weight!! So have started on weightwatchers but am getting too hungry on the normal amount of points, and I know bfing uses up calories. But how many extra points should I give myself enough to account for bfing yet still to lose weight?

I can't ask my leader cos I do WW at home, and my subscription ran out ages ago! And I know slimming world accounts for bfing, but DH does WW so its easier to stay on the same diet. Can anyone help me?

Oh, and ds is on a growth spurt at the moment (he's 4mths) and I'm starving - I guess cos he's feeding every 3 hrs for about 1-1.5hrs! so what do I do then?? I've ended up binging on chocolate which can't be good Grin

006, does it still count (the extra points) if your baby is 18 months old and bfing frequently?

006 what weight were you then if you don't mind me asking cos you prob. have to add it to the points you're sposed to gave for your weight aren't you.

I started WW 6 weeks ago when I was bf my then 10 month old - he was feeding 5-6 times a day, some little 5 min feeds and other longer ones. He eats lots of foods, has 3 meals a day but no milk other than breastmilk.
Without the bf I was allowed 18 points (I started at 11 stone with a little over a stone to lose), so I added on 4 points for bf and gave myself 22 each day. I made up the 4 points to add but having been on WW before successfully I thought I'd know if it was too much or too little, i.e. if too few points I'd be starving which you should never be on WW and if too many I'd not lose weight.
I have lost 1-2lbs every week since and am happy with how the 22 points went.
Word of caution - after 2 weeks on being on WW my ds2 suddenley stopped bf and has not returned. He was teething so that is the most likely explanation but I do wonder if my changed diet affected my milk - maybe made it less fatty and less tasty to him?? Maybe he missed the daily doses of carrot cake and ginger snaps!

Just make sure you don't miss out on vital calories that you need while you're feeding - I wanted to start WW earlier than 10months post birth, but was worried that I'd get too tired which is why I waited. Hope this helps.

i can't remember how many extra but i could eat loads, and I lost 2 stone in 2 months.

rosied · 28/02/2006 12:51

I'm sure you will need more than the 4 points I was adding on, particularly if you're planning to exclu bf your 4 month old till he's 6 months. Think I would have added on about 8 or 10 extra points if I'd started around this time but your circumstances will be unique so maybe you do need advice. Have you tried searching on the WW website?

How many points are you on each day (not taking account the bf)? Could you try for a week adding on say 8 or 10 points and see what difference it makes?

beartime · 28/02/2006 13:21

without bf I'd be on 20pts - yes I could try that I'spose.

Beartime - when DD2 was about 4/5 months and still exclusively fed I tried WW I had an extra 6 points per day.

If you have 2/3 stone to loss I think and addtional 6 points would be fine. More than 3 stone and I would add on 8 or 10 points I think.

In my ww leaflet it says exclusive breastfeeding add on 10 points, when weaning go down to 6 !! wooo ! :) ( and I still lost weight with the extra)

Mummyvicky - thanks for that - it confirmed what I found when I searched elsewhere on the internet today - to add 10pts on - no wonder I was starving Grin I wonder if you can add another 10 pts during a growth spurt Grin Grin

I added 10 points for exclusive breastfeeding and lost weight at a ridiculous rate. In the end I was having about an extra 15 or so and still easily losing a couple of pounds a week. I had a lot to lose though!

beartime · 28/02/2006 20:11

cool - I hope I do the same cos I still have 30lb to lose Blush
