I gave birth 4 Weeks ago she is gaining weight slowly but not back at birth weight yet.I am mostly breast feeding but am giving top up of formula in the evening.
This week I am also expressing after feeding.I am only getting about 30ml off.
most the time during the day she is attached to the breast.I would say she is of the beat for about 5 hours a day. Isthis normal? She is getting lots of dirty and wet nappies.
Do I have enough milk for her?
Should I just give up on bf and go to formula?
I feel really upset that I can't give her enough milk.

Hi, is there any particular reason why you are giving formula? At this stage supplementing with formula will have a direct knock on your supply. Each time you don't put her to the breast and give her formula instead, you're not sending the message to your body to make more milk.

Don't worry too much about how much you can express as this is indicative of how much milk your baby is getting. Babies are far better at getting milk out than any machine!

And yes, at this stage, they are pretty much superglued to you.

However, as you say that weight gain is slow, has anyone checked this out? It could be that milk transference isn't totally effective?

We have been up to the hospital twice for her to be reviewed.they are happy with her and have have did discharged us.
Before her formula feed I always give her the breast first. I am worried that if I don't give her formula she will loose more weight and I will have to top up after each feed.
Yesterday she had a total of 100ml of formula, the day before was only 50ml.x

Sorry, can you just confirm that she is gaining slowly OR losing weight? There's a big difference!

Springtime, this must be difficult and worrying for you.

You don't say what you have been doing to increase i) your milk and ii) her intake.

Can you give more info?

I don't know what you mean by 'of the breast 5 hrs a day' - do you mean on or off?
