The attachment parenting/extended bf article in G2 today- was it supportive or woo?

Saw it on my parents paper today. DM is starting to get discouraging (just hints) and I'm hoping it was supportive and she read it! rather than the Daily mail style extended bf is woo IYSWIM.

I quite enjoyed that article actually. Well balanced anyway I think.

It wasnt really about bf. It was about how US parents and UK parents 'do' attachment parenting really rather differently - heavily hinting that the US lot are ridiculously purist while in the UK, parents are sensible and moderate and non-judgmental :)

I'm still not entirely clear on what attachment parenting is, or if I am one.

Harr1etJ0nes · 22/05/2012 19:36

Thanks. It's fairly balanced anyway which is what matters.

I'm starting to really hate the way that attachment parenting is presented as a 'movement' which one is a 'member' of, complete with its own 'experts' and 'gurus' (Sears, Liedloff etc).

In fact, I'm starting to hate the AP label itself (ironic for a co-sleeping toddler-breastfeeding old hippy like me). These labels make it harder for us to accept the complexity of other peoples' choices and parenting styles.

I agree, zoob. There seems to be an 'all or nothing' mentality from those I know who 'practice' AP - and almost evangelical in their approach. While I'm open to all sides of the debate, I don't want to be told what is best for my child. I'd rather pick and choose from different parenting 'styles' to suit both me and my family.
