Expressed milk - husband feeding baby

Hi all,

I have a store of expressed breast milk in the freezer. My DH is taking my 7wo out this pm and will be feeding her while he's there. I've not used the frozen milk before, can I defrost it quickly and if so, how long will it keep? He's off to a restaurant so won't be able to store the milk in a fridge while he's there.

Thanks

I would take it in a cool bag to the restaurant and then reheat it in warm water when there. There is a good guide on the la leche league website- google la leche league expressing.

Enjoy your afternoon off!!

According the a little handout I have stuck on my fridge which was from the Breastfeeding Network it states:

Defrosted in fridge = 12 hours
Defrosted outside fridge = immediately

Have you got a small cool bag? I got one from tesco for about £3 and put a freezer block in there so it's like a fridge so you don't have to throw any milk away and can keep the frozen/thawing milk in there for a couple of hours.

Enjoy your time off marathonmama!

The Kelly Mom site also has good advice on storage and use of EBM. Given that it is currently frozen, what I would do is put it frozen into a cool bag (if you have a small one?) - Or indeed some changing bags have a little insulated pocket for bottles - which would also work. It should just gradually start to defrost but stay cool. Then when he needs it he can just finsh defrosting it / warm it up in a jug/bowl of hot water. Breast milk really won't go off after a couple of hours out of the freeze - marvellous stuff!
