what are criteria for mastitis?

and how early should i be worried?

reason being:
i got a lumpy boob yesterday afternoon, and DD hasn't been able to drain it.

I get them quite a bit (well, ir's been 2 or 3 times), and each time before DD has manged to drain it in the night.
this time, however,it's been really painful, and it feels like she's drawing fire Shock when she's feeding.
it made for a very uncomfortable nuight, and although it was less this morning,it was still there and large.

I tried a hot flannel, rugby hold (she hated that!), a shower,
now it's rather red (but i don't know if that's because of the blockage or me pummeling it!) and still a big lump.
it's not hurting as she feeds now.

I took 2 ibuprofen at about 9am, and have rubbed on arnica cream.

should i go to the doctor or is it too soon?

I would not go to the doctor unless you have a temperature to be honest.
Have a look at kellymom - there is really good advice on there.
Have you checked your nipple really carefully to see if you might have a milk bleb? The times I have not been able to drain a blocked boob, more often than not I have had one of these and when I popped it there was instant relief.

oh.
i've made an appointment for 5:40. I suppose i can cancel if it's better..

I really do feel sick. :(

I haven't got a bleb on my nipple - i checked that.
and when I massage and squeeze the area, nothing comes out at all (even when i do it like normal expressing)

i just looked at kellymom- doesn't sound like mastitis (thankfully)

it's on my good boob, which is really frustrating.
I don't think I'd be so bothered if i didn't feel sick and headachy.

I was just worried about it getting worse.

i did explain to the receptionist, and she was the one that made the appointment.

Ibuprofen to take the swelling down?

kansasred · 03/05/2012 12:00

no harm in going to GP - you can always get the prescription and store it if you dont want to start ABs straight away.

the most important thing is to keep feeding from the boob. have you got a pump too?

nickelhasababy · 03/05/2012 12:04

thanks :)

yes, i tried the submerging.

it felt better this morning after 6 solid feeding hours! but it feels worse now, and i've just fed her on it.

i will keep feeding her from it - it really hurts when i do though! Shock

i have got a pump, yes, i tried that last night.
it did less than feeding!
