My dd is 2weeks old and was 8lb when born. He is ff only and whereas he was having 90ml every 3to4 hours, even overnight, he has suddenly turned ravenous.

During the day he is asking for about 150 ml every 3hours but overnight needed 100 ml every 2 hours. He has not been sick at all and I am going on his hunger cues, so know he is hungry . It is also the ferocity that he is drinking it with that concerns me and I am winding him throughout feed and making him go slow as best as I can.

Is this normal? I have tried offering him boiled water which does not satisfy him. As soon as he has had what he deems to be enough, he falls asleep.

Any ideas?

Congrats on your DD. I don't know about FF but there are loads of growth spurts in the first few months and for BF babies it's common for them to up their intake at those times, might be the same for FF babies too. I remember DD's growth spurt around that time, complete boob monster however I think you have to be careful with FF babies as you can overfeed them whereas BF babies self regulate. Have you asked ur HV?

please don't give your very young baby water, it can be dangerous

follow your baby's cues, as you are doing, remember to not try to get him to drink every drop of milk, go with the flow and get some RL advice. have you been handed over to the HV yet, or are you still under the midwife?

Water is not dangerous if have less than 2to 3oz at a time. It only causes an imbalance if they have loads. I am talking about a few sips just to give him sucking comfort when he refuses dummy.

I also never make him drink it all.....I can't stop him draining it!

Will see HV next week.
