Need help getting ExBF 12mo to drink milk and other liquids

Cross-posting from the Weaning thread because I'm hoping someone here will have suggestions!

DD recently turned one. She's ExBF and still feeds after breakfast and before bed, after lunch if we're home for her pm nap, and during the night if she wakes up, which is only occasionally now. I'm happy to continue BFing as long as she's interested, but I would like her to start drinking more water and start to drink milk.

She drinks water during the day, but not much maybe 2 or 3 ounces max and she has absolutely no interest in drinking cow's milk from a cup or bottle (though I do sneak it into her breakfast cereal/porridge, and she also eats loads of natural yogurt and some cheese).

I've tried several different sippy cups, trying to get her to take milk, but she just won't go for it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, I think that her volumes of water and milk sound ok, considering how many BFs she is still having. As long as you have a water cup available outside of mealtimes then you know she isn't thirsty. She may drink more water if / when she drops the post lunch BF.

With my DS and DD they didn't "replace" milk feeds with large volumes of either water or cow's milk as they got older, because they were replacing milk with food. DS loved fruit and would get juice in that, and DD likes veg soup which is also quite liquidy. DS went from 6 BF per day at 11 months to none as he stopped feeding overnight out of the blue - wouldn't do bottles so had cow's milk in porridge, cheese + yogurt and his cup for water, but still didn't drink large volumes.

Perhaps try a Doidy cup with a small amount of cow's milk in it? At 18 months (still BF morning + night) DD still has v small amounts of cow's milk as a drink, DS 3.5 loves it in huge cupfuls, think it's an age thing. My DCs wouldn't tolerate cow's milk out of sippy cups either - think they only saw them as "water" cups.

Thanks, NotAnOstrich. Your comment has put my mind at ease. DD definitely eats lots of solids these days, so not looking to replace BFs with milk, just want to make sure she gets enough liquids, though, and calcium. Hopefully, between the yogurt and cheese, she's doing alright.

I do offer her milk and water in a Doidy cup occasionally. Most ends up on the floor, but fx she gets the hang of it soon. I think it makes sense that they'd grow in to drinking more milk as they get older. Will try not to worry too much. :)

Thanks again!
