Storing Breastmilk - Avent Via or Freezer Bags??

Flutterbye · 06/02/2006 20:24

I'm due in a couple of months with no 2, am determined to do better at breastfeeding than I did with no 1. Would like to give him/her the odd bottle from 6 weeks on or so, I've got an Avent Isis hand pump and used the Avent bottles with no 1, are the Via range any good for expressing and storing breastmilk or should I use the freezer bags (from Boots, etc), or something else entirely???

get cheap small bottles from boots

I have had many an accident with exploding bags when thawing milk...
bottles are also reusable

Bags are best if you are keeping the milk for more than a week but the Avent via disposables are quite good - you get an attachment for the breast pump. I've found myself using the via bottles more for leftovers (weaning) than I ever did for breastmilk though. I used to keep milk in the avent bottles in the fridge if I wasn't freezing it.

Not sure if that helps or not!

Just been researching purchase of bags for expressed milk on t'internet, as Avent don't seem to produce them anymore (I had inherited some from my sister). Best price I found was from expressyourselfmums.co.uk who had Lansinoh bags at £5 per 25. They have a double ziplock. Arrived yesterday, and haven't tried them yet, but look promising. HTH

Boots sell them own brand £7.99 for 40 my ocal boots have reduced them to 5.99!!

Racers · 06/02/2006 20:51

The boots ones are fine - a bit fiddly but you get the hang of them fairly quickly.

Blondeinlondon · 06/02/2006 21:15

I would recommend the lansinoh ones

roosmum · 06/02/2006 21:22

i like bags (avent) & get on fine with them...no explosions here (yet!).
hth.

popsycalindisguise · 06/02/2006 21:22

boots ones explode when thawing

Racers · 06/02/2006 21:30

no exploding here, no problems defrosting!

popsycalindisguise · 06/02/2006 21:31

odd
I thought I just had a dodgy box...but it happened with a few different boxes of boots own brand

Racers · 06/02/2006 21:37

I haven't used a full box so maybe my field of experience isn't so great!

Hope you didn't lose too much EBM in your explosions. I would probably cry!

notasheep · 06/02/2006 21:54

The Boots ones were fine here,I stored them in date order in an ice cream box,I became quite obsessed with the whole thing!

hunkermunker · 06/02/2006 23:19

Love the Lansinoh ones - much easier to use than ones with separate clips. Lansinoh a lovely company to deal with too - really friendly. Would rather they had my money than Boots

alfiesmum · 07/02/2006 14:14

www.thenaturalbabyresource.com have the Lansinoh bags on buy one get one free at the moment (£4.95). I have been a bit lazy with expressing this time round so have only used one bag, but they seem good so far and were easy to use.

Gerber do good self sealing ones that are very inexpensive.
