Quiting bf cold-turkey after 4.5months. How long will the pain last?

I'm exhausted from expressing for dd as she would never latch on.

I'm devastated to give up and feel selfish and guilty but just couldn't carry on and had to stop NOW.

I know I should have done it gradually but I just couldn't go on with it any longer.

I stopped expressing mostly yesterday, just a little to take the edge off. I last expressed at 7am this morning. Boobs are like rocks and are so sore.

How long will the soreness last? Should I be expressing slightly to relieve the pressure or will that draw the whole process out? Is there anything I can do to ease the process?

Err I think you should express even just a little you could end up with mastitues if your sore and hard. These are some of the early signs, please express to relive the pain. It will take you longer to dry up but at lest you woun't end up ill.

Hi there,
Am just giving up now at 10 months, did a gradual wind-down over a month or so.

My boobs were really uncomfortable for 2-3 days and still tender now, but I think I'm over the worst of it.

If you can't face expressing, can I suggest that you lie in a hot bath with boobs submerged and squeeze them? It made my milk flow out and I didn't have to use much pressure - squeezed using the palms of my hands rather than pinching with my fingers.

Hope you feel better soon.

Well done for getting to where you have. Don't feel guilty. You've done your best and then some. The rock thing isn't pleasant is it?!. I expressed tiny bits when pain was really quite bad and found it quite soon got better. I don't think expressing a small bit every day or so will drag things on.

Thank you,

How much do you think is a small bit. They're so full that after a couple of minutesof pumping I have 5oz from each breast. Is that too much?

i would think 5oz is a bit too much.... but then again if thats what you get, thats what you get...

perhaps try to stop after 4 (or 4.5)oz next time?

yes it might take a bit longer, but in my eyes that would be preferable to caring for a baby with mastitus

Yes I agree with nannyl. Do really as little as you can to relieve it a bit.
