Breastfeeding and 'conscious sedation'.

Does anyone have any experience of this?

I'm having some wisdom teeth out and have been told they will use 'conscious sedation' rather than general anaesthetic. My main concern/question is how long it will be before I can feed. I'm bfing DD2 (9 months) and she needs a bf in the evening to settle her, and then feeds quite a bit through the night- we're co-sleeping. She'll cope fine if I have to leave it a few hours in the day, but if there's a 12 hour or 24 hour break needed, it will be more problematic.

I'm seeing the dentist this afternoon, so will ask, but with issues like this I often find MN knows best! And I'll probably need to make the appointment today, so want to go armed with as much info as possible.

Do you know which drug they will be sedating you with Pozzled?

No, the information I've got doesn't say, but I'll ask today.

I've just had another thought as well- I suppose I shouldn't co-sleep the first night, depending on the timing of the operation?

You can also contact the drugs in breastmilk helpline
www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/drugs-in-breastmilk.html

I do know that with a gerental you would be able to feed the same day but not sure about sedation.

i had a ga when DD was 3 days old. I expressed for DH to feed her whilst I was unconscious, but was able to bf later that day.

Thanks everyone, looks like it should be fine then. Very reassuring.

I had concious sedation for an endoscopy (camera into my gut from my mouth) and was told 24h (medazolam and fentanyl) I asked them to double check with Hale's Medication and Mother's Milk textbook (the drugs & bfing textbook) and they came back with 4 hours.

I had the max doses of these drugs (so much so that the last person they gave that amount to had a heart attack!) but I kept coming round so they abandoned the procedure in the end. I obviously have a very efficient liver Wink baby was still fine when she fed 4 hours later.

If you are awake you have obviously processed enough of it to be awake so the levels will be lower than if you are groggy still. Wendy Jones at the BfN Drugs in BM helpline is fab so if you get conflicting answers from the HCP looking after you she is your 'go to' resource!

Good luck with the procedure.
