But she's doing brilliantly with the left (DP never had a preference!). I've been watching her latch and it seems ok. I've tried tummy to tummy and rugby ball hold? Any other suggestions? I've ended up with mastitis as a result which I've sorted with expressing. Help!

Bad luck with the mastitis.

There is no such thing as an empty boob - boobs produce milk as you go along. The mastitis is more likely to have been caused by a slightly awkward feeding position or perhaps her hand or some clothing pressing on your boob and preventing one of your ducts from emptying.

IME they often have a strong preference (often temporary) for one side, I found that holding them in a rugby ball position helping to convince them they were on the other breast, IKYWIM. If that's not doing the trick could you try lying down to feed or google biological nuturing.

Was the birth difficult? Sometimes babies have some discomfort lying on one side after being quite squeezed and some people find cranial osteopathy can help for this

Mastitis sounds painful though, can you get to a baby cafe or breastfeeding group for some assistance with positioning and support?

Or speak to one of the helplines?
National Breastfeeding helpline 0300 100 0212
NCT Breastfeeding helpline 0300 330 0700

Hopefully someone more expert will be along soon (my brain doesn't work very well this early Smile )

I think that sounds like me, my 4 week ds preferres my left side and wont really go to my right, it does not help that i find it difficult to hold him on my right breast, i am also pumping for him as he had to have top ups in his first week of life due to health problems and was threatened with paed giving him bottle if i did not comply Sad.

Went to breast feeding cafe today - bloody awesome! Wish I'd had the same support/help with Dd1. Helped with the latch etc and since this afternoon she's fed better and winded better too! (less gassy!) my boob feels normal! Thanks for help - will keep practising! Smile Grin Smile

Am pretty sure we've got a better latch now, so why has DD started feeding more frequently in the last 6hrs and her poo gone green? Hmm
