How do you actually do skin to skin without getting soaked?

I BFed DS and just could not do skin to skin with him because if I took my bra off, he and I both got soaked with milk squirting in all directions. Am I missing something? How are you supposed to do it?

I did a lot of skin skin at first before my milk came in, then as it was getting established. Now I would have the same problem as you (11 weeks) so i would skin skin in the bath.

DD was prem so it was really important for us to do skin to skin and I did it every second day or so. But always had to take a change of clothes in with me as yes I got completely soaked in milk when I did it. Very good for my supply though and I always had a bumper expressing session after I'd held her!

Sounds like you have a lot of milk, I did not get any squirting, just a bit of leaking, and I was lucky enough never to leak at inopportune times. Everyone has different levels of leakiness I think!

Didn't your bra get soaked through if you were squirting all the time regardless?

KD0706 · 04/02/2012 22:48

bertie I don't know about others, but I wasn't leaking all the time, it was just that holding DD skin to skin triggered my let down so the milk came flowing.
Also, I used breast pads in my bra to contain leaks that happened at other times.

Snap with KD. I got a let-down if I was cuddling DS, whether I was feeding him or not. Usually it was fine because I used breast pads, but without those it got very wet very quickly.

By squirting, I mean as in I could 'fire' clear over the top of our breakfast bar Shock

That's impressive AKMD
I just dripped copious amounts. No 'firing' from me!!

I have the same problem, tbh i just leave my bra on for skin to skin as the other boob would cause too much mess! That and loads of tissues under the one i'm feeding from :o)

OneLittleBabyGirl · 05/02/2012 05:37

I always leave my bra on too.

Ah I see! No I never got spontaneous letdown either. Didn't get the squirting while passing crying baby in the supermarket thing which everyone talks about. Perhaps I'm the abnormal one Grin

I used terry nappies tucked over my boobs. Also handy for cosleeping to save drowning the poor child!
