Should I be worried about this? Combination feeding and sudden reduction in dirty nappies

Hi there, I have a similar issue to another poster on here at the moment and wondering if someone can help.

I introduced 1 bottle mid morning for my 4.5mo DD2 about 3 weeks ago, then a second bottle in the late afternoon at the start of last week. The remaining feeds (about 5) are all breastmilk and will remain so for now. The problem is that since last Thursday she has only had one dirty nappy, which was on Monday. Prior to this she was fairly regular every day. She is still having plenty of wet nappies. Sorry if TMI but it's still a similar consistency to before. I think it's the introduction of formula that may have slowed her system down a bit but I'm not sure if I should be worried yet?

The reason I'm asking is that this change seems to coincide with her suddenly getting really grumpy, when she is normally so chilled out.

Thanks for any replies

Hello. I'm sorry that my reply will not be much help, but I'm in the opposite situation. My 4mo DD has recently rejected the breast (ongoing saga over the last couple of weeks!) and I now can only feed her via a bottle. I express as much as I can, but she will end up with 1 or 2 formula feeds a day. We've been doing this for 3 days now. Prior to this, she would poop every 3 days - but now she poops every day. I put it down to her system adjusting to the new milk and it may be the same with your lo.

If her behaviour continues to be out of character and you're worried, I would pop to see your health visitor or GP. xx

Thanks for your reply Nicola, it sounds like she may just be adjusting to the new milk then. It's tricky because I don't know at which point it stops being less frequent but still OK and starts becoming constipated.

It doesn't seem right to me that a baby should go for that long without a dirty nappy but I suppose it must be alright.

Sorry meant to also say I will definitely keep an eye on things and will see the HV if it gets worse

EBF babies can go days without poos- I think our record was 6. Sounds to me like the formula is making her constipated hence the grumpiness. The only thing that makes my sunnynatured ds grumpy is constipation. We found that certain sorts of formula made ds constipated when we introduced it at 7 months- I think SMA was the worst offender. Try a different brand formula. Is she taking any other liquid yet? We used to make sure ds was having more water when he was constipated.

Yes I've heard that about SMA too. We use Aptamil for DD1, and stuck with that for DD2 but I will also look into others and see if it makes a difference
