My 11 week old has developed a habit of coming off the breast and turning his head to look at me, he is currently doing it roughly every 3 seconds, with a rapid gulp of milk in between. I've tried covering his head so he can't get distracted but he keeps doing it, even if he can't see. Also he occasionally bites the nipple and shakes his head, although thankfully that hasn't happened as often. Has anyone else had this problem? Any advice gratefully received. He's ebf and I've never expressed so there's no nipple confusion. He seems to be getting worse at feeding as he's getting bigger and stronger not better. He's getting plenty of milk, so it's my problem not his, but my poor nipples are hurting.

My son did exactly the same but only if i was in a noisy room. tv, another person anything would set him off. Also ebf, never had a bottle as rejected it by the time i wanted to introduce it. found only way to feed him was to take him to an empty room, usually my bedroom and do like a night feed. it is binding as cant feed in public but he got over it. was fine in feeding rooms so could still get out and about as long as i checked out where to feed first. think it was around 5 months he was fine anywhere. Luckily not a biter but have you tried the breastfeeding support groups or the phoneline. i found both ace. dont let the support group name put you off. the ones by me were just baby groups where every one breast fed. there was a midwife there and you could get your baby weighed. v convient.

good luck.

I remember my ds doing the same! It was soo frustrating, and eventually a little painful as he kept the nipple in his mouth while turning... it lasted a good maybe 3 weeks and he just grew out if it. I tried everything from feeding under a wrap to quiet room, but I wore myself out- he came out of it on his own Smile

Thanks tricksybsby and mampig, I will try a quieter darker room in the day and will also check out a clinic, I think we have several nearby. Yesterday he did greenish poos which I believe means he could be getting too much foremilk and not enough hind... Which would make sense after all the messing around he did yesterday! I'll give LLL a call, or someone said the national bf helpline is good. Glad to hear yours settled down naturally in time mampig.

Verdict from the clinic was that he is teething.
