13mo hurting me when breast feeding now she's getting more teeth

My DS feeds twice a day (first and last thing). She grew two front bottom teeth in November and this didn't cause me any problems, but she's now cutting 3 top ones at the front and it's hurting quite a lot. She's not biting me, but it seems the teeth just seem to catch me when she's feeding. This morning I have some marks which are quite sore - they haven't broken the surface of skin, but are red and like there's bleeding under the skin. I've put some Lansinoh on, but wondered if anyone had any advice - would other positions help? She currently feeds across me. I don't want to give up b/f, but I don't want this to get worse as I had lots of problems with Thursh in the first 5 months of B/f when the skin got broken. Any help appreciated!

I'm going through exactly the same thing - and my dd grew 4 top teeth in the space of a week! The marks sound identical to mine but she punctured the skin too.

Is she 'biting' both breasts? If it's just one (as it is with me) I use an adaptation of the rugby position for the breast she's 'bitten'. Basically you need to change the position of her mouth on the breast. I'm also combining bottle feeding with breast feeding so that I give the breast she's hurt some time to heal - so I let her feed off the breast that doesn't hurt, then I give her a bit of the bottle, then I move her onto the breast that hurts (in the new position) - this way her suck isn't so fierce as she's had a fair amount of milk already. If she's biting both breasts then you'll need to use the rugby position for both but that's tough and not easy to do - well it isn't for me as my dd is 11 months old and quite heavy to handle!

The other thing I'm considering is breast shields...

this has some tips.
I had the same problem. To be honest, I didn't seem to be able to do anything about it, though I tried to encourage him to latch on better. I felt like I might have to stop at one time but it just got better by itself - I guess he learnt to adjust his latch. They still dig in sometimes when he not latched on very well, but it's never too bad.
Hope things improve for you soon

grace11 It's worse on her favourite side and I couldn't manage the rugby hold now as she's so big, but I hadn't thought about shields - good idea for back up.
marzipananimal Thanks for reminding me about Kellymom - I always forget to look there, but it's so helpful. Had a bit of success with altering the position and tilting her head back tonight and not as sore so will see if I can perfect it in the morning; however, am not always with it at 5am when she wakes up! Thanks both.
