Taking Flucloxacillin for Mastitis - which prebiotics to ward off thrush?

Have just started course of AB's for Mastitis and don't want to get thrush as well. I've seen recommendations for taking prebiotics on here, but no brand names mentioned - can anyone recommend one?

If your going to take prebiotics you need to vist the health food shop to take them in tablet form as any of the drinks are a bit useless and most of the good bits get killed by the stomach acid.

I wouldn't know a brand to recomend though or if you can take them while BF.

I drank loads of Actimel day and night when I took antibiotics. I hope you feel better soon :)

I take Boots own 'Breastfeeding Support' which has a multi-vitamin and prebiotic capsule each day. I've had 2 courses of flucloxy-wotsit for episiotomy infection and managed to avoid thrush.

Oooh thank you all! Smile I shall haul my aching boobs to Boots and Holland and Barrett tomorrow and see what I can find.

I asked in holland & Barrett before & they said they couldn't advise on any whilst bf. Hmm

Iv just been docs with mastitis and was given fluxocillin and doc NEVER mentioned thrush sorry if I sound thick but can it cause thrush in breast/nipple or do u mean 'down below?!' Also any tips for mastitis or what could have caused it so I can try not get it again. My boos are quite big is that a cause? I couldn't feel any lumps but doc said the underneath felt a bit lumpy (quite frankly can't recall last time I saw the underneath of my boobs, probably when I was a pert 18yr old before children!)

glamourmama there is some useful info on mastitis here

nitnatnaboo, I ate some bio yoghurt/actimel while on antibiotics. Don't know whether it helped but I've had antibiotics 4 times for mastitis and never got thrush
How long is your course of ABs? They only gave me 7 days the first 2 times I had it and it came back. They are supposed to prescribe 10-14 days (can reference if you like)

nitnatnaboo · 20/01/2012 22:40

Glamourmama poor you. It starts with blocked duct I think, then if that doesn't get cleared it gets a bit manky in there, hence need for antibiotics.
I think my blocked duct was caused by me not paying enough attention to her latch and not stopping her speciality of "pulling her head away whilst still latched on whilst bracing herself against me with her arms" (ouch). The nipple got more and more sore and then i got the mastitus but until it got really sore I never actually realised I had blocked ducts as they are underneath like yours. I'm also finding them very hard to shift and it's still painful more than 24 hours into the AB's.

Marzipan Eek! 4 times?! Poor you as well! Will knit get some nice bio yoghurt. Thanks for the advice re the 14 days. I shall be prepared to go back rather than suffer if it doesn't go away. I've never had any kind of thrush either but know that breastfeeding with a less than perfect latch + taking AB's is a good way to get nipple thrush so am being cautious.
