Am I ever going to get my period back?

Apologies in advance for a potentially how-long's-a-piece-of-string question. My son is nearly 14 months old. He has pretty much dropped his day feeds (occasionally he has one after waking from a nap). I feed him before he goes to sleep, then usually a couple of times a night and sometimes on waking.

I haven't had a period since he was born. I wouldn't mind this at all were it not for the fact that we would like to start TTC No. 2. And I'd be happy to postpone that for a little while if I were a few years younger (I'm 33 now). I bumped into someone yesterday I knew slightly from a BF drop-in group who only recently weaned her son, who's about the same age as mine. She's a couple of years older than me I think and said she managed to get pregnant whilst feeding him. So I realise everyone is different, but could I ask other MNetters who BF: when did you get your periods back, and were you still feeding at the time?

I got mine with DD1 very early on, I think she was 9 weeks, but I don't think they were proper ones. We night weaned her at around 18 mo in the attempt to get more sleep (didn't work!) and I became pregnant not long after. We hadn't been using contraception at any point

It's different for everyone but night weaning is one option that might work for you.

DS is 14 mos & I'm still waiting! He's mostly nightweaned but usually feeds AM, PM and before naps. I think it's just different for everyone. My midwife advised me to start taking a low-dose pill anyway because you could in theory fall pregnant the first time you ovulated again without ever seeing a period! Good luck.

I've just got mine back this weekend :(
DD is 8mo, & I'm still bf.
I haven't done any night feeds since before christmas, so not sure if that might have caused it. Still feeding at 4/5 o'clock in the mornings though.
I've heard of people becoming pg while bfing without having a period.

DD1 - not ebf to start with (mainly bottles of formula) until 8 wk then ebf got my period back at 9w.

DD2 - conceived when DD1 was 11m and bf day and night (4 times at night at 12m). Ebf for 23wk then food and bf. Got my period back at 11m.

DD3 - conceived when DD2 was 13m and DD1 was 34m (both bfing), ebf to 26wk, got my period back at 11m.

No more babies Sad & Grin

mine came back for a two months in August/September [9/10 months] and then has gone again, DD is 13 months, we are also wanting to try for DC2. I've got to see GP about another issue so was going to raise it. BF first thing, before afternoon cool down [2pm ish] and 10pm.

My son is nearly 20 weeks and I stopped feeding him through the night about two weeks ago as he started to sleep (last feed is bedtime around 18:45 and then I express at 10ish for a dream feed at 11pm) and I got my period back yesterday. Though I was talking to a friend today who stopped feeding her son (second baby) at about 14 weeks I think (he sleeps through 7 til 7 with no feed between then!!) and he is now 6 months and she still hasn't got her period back. Think it massively varies....

BrokenBananaMeltdown · 15/01/2012 19:44

I had a 3 or 4 periods at random intervals whilst BF, but only got regular periods once DS had weaned at 24 months.
Good luck, OP!

BenRoo · 15/01/2012 23:32

My DS is also 14 months. He still has 2-3 feeds a day (2 in the night/1 in the morning) and he has recently stopped asking for a bedtime feed.
I got my 1st period last month....and now haven't a clue what to expect?!?!?

verylittlecarrot · 15/01/2012 23:37

Mine returned almost immediately after posting a similar post to yours on mumsnet.
With dd at 18 months, with ds at 20 months.
So no doubt yours should be along any day now. Grin

birdofthenorth · 15/01/2012 23:38

I got mine back at 10 months after night-weaning. Got pg at 12.5 months, still feeding 2-3 times a day. (sadly mc'd but I did still get pg while bf! DD now 16.5 mo, bf once a day, periods normal)

Tmesis · 15/01/2012 23:55

9 months, 13 months and 9 months (all while bf). Mi d you, haven't had a second period this time and she's nearly 11 months i had better not be pregnant.

Babieseverywhere · 16/01/2012 14:58

My periods come back after 15 months, which is why my three children are spaced an even 24 months apart both times.

Each time I fell pregnant a month later and I was nursing each time I fell pregnant.
