Breast feeding and antibiotics Metronidazole

I wasn't sure where to place this thread but thought I'd give it a go on here.

I've been prescribed by my Doctor Metronidazole antibiotics. I am exclusively breast feeding and am concerned about taking them. It says on the instructions not to if bf as it may affect the baby but my Doctor has said it was ok. My friend has asked her Doctor for a second opinion and he said not to take them.

Has anyone on here took these and if so was there a problem? The reason I need to take them is just a water infection so not a major issue, I would rather put up with that than cause problems for my baby.

Thank you for any replies.

I have taken metronidazole while bfing though my 'babies' were 2 & 3 so not really a concern for many drugs like a newborn might be.

I checked with Wendy Jones at the Drugs in Breastmilk Helpline (she's a pharmacist and a breastfeeding counsellor) or have a look at their Helpsheets - she's very good and she said this 'Metronidazole can change the flavour of milk but apparently eating extra garlic masks the taste' but I would double check with her as your circumstances may make a difference to whether it is compatible with bfing your baby.

I have just finished a weeks course of these , along with another set and lots of painkillers for an infected hemotoma following a c section . The doctor who prescribed them took them for the same reason. Apparently can make the milk bitter .

I spoke to my health visitor and although she said the dose was high , it is fairly common.

Go to another doctor if you are worried for a second opinion . I did this during pregnancy for some eye drops and was given a different perscrption .

I'm a gp. Metronidazole is unusual choice of antibiotic for urine infection but might be due to results of a urine sample sent to lab saying these are best for your bug? If not perhaps see someone else (and feed back to gp why) as metro is not nice to take and other drug might be better. Metronidazole is safe in breastfeeding.will ne present in breast milk but not known to cause harm to baby. Hope you get better soon.

Had it confirmed by pharmacist on bf network that it is ok to take. Just put this on here in case anyone else searches for it. Thank you to passthestuffing and truthsweet for advice and Link.
