Hi

Harvey has the ocassional feed out of a bottle but Im struggling to find a bottle he likes. He doesnt refuse the bottle and does feed from it but doesnt seem to enjoy it much! Not sure if this is because he just prefers the boob or the bottles I use. I use the Comfort Nuby and have also tried him on the Nuk Orthodontic - I was wondering what other Mums of BFing babies have found - Ive been both recommended and warned away from Avent for Breastfed babies so not sure what to try next.

I used Avent variable flow teat for dd with some success - the rate of flow was more dependent on her suck like b'feeding and you rotate the bottle if you need it faster or slower. Is he getting expressed atm as this also seemed to make the transition easier.

I used Avent without problem.

hana · 11/11/2003 17:10

Don't know what bottles I used, but they had the NUK teat on them (actually think I bought the bottles in Canada) but you can get similar here that fit the NUK teat. This teat is shaped slightly differently than the Avent one, and has a hole on one side near the base that is supposed to allow air to escape. ?? The bottles they fit are fairly slim. I always thought the Avent ones were quite chunky.
hope you find something that works!

Avent

CP · 11/11/2003 18:25

Avent worked for us.

pie · 11/11/2003 18:50

Well DD2 has just had her first bottle of EBM, like a fish to water with an Avent.

princesspeahead · 11/11/2003 18:55

my 2nd liked avent but this one won't touch them. which is a bigger as I have 100 avent bottles and 2000 avent teats of various types (well slight exaggeration but you know what I mean). so using widenecked tommee tippee ones.
avent teats are just a bit too stiff for some very fussy babies. most normal babies seem to like them though!

princesspeahead · 11/11/2003 18:55

that should be bugger, not bigger...

fio2 · 11/11/2003 19:09

tommee tippee, standard type

philippat · 11/11/2003 19:16

I wrote a huge essay on this once, let's see if I can find it...
here

motherinferior · 11/11/2003 20:00

I've used Boots latex variflo (thank you phillipat) with most success; now dd2 is taking it I'm thinking of switching just because the teats are perishing pdq.

Marina · 11/11/2003 20:19

We used the Playtex system which is also latex based, MI (apparently latex, being a natural product, is supposed to be more like human flesh...) and that was the only one ds would take. Am about to gird up my loins with dd on this so have read others' suggestions with interest. Good luck Beccarollo and way to go, Pie and dd!

janh · 11/11/2003 20:48

I used Playtex for all mine (jumping in at the end here, prompted by Marina's post, haven't read any others) - dunno about latex, but I was impressed by the claim that the sucking technique required for them was the same as that for breastfeeding, something to do with how the baby uses its tongue? Also the little plastic bags squeezing closed as they emptied supposedly mimicked the breast and reduced wind. (V expensive though - the bags that is.)

Evita · 11/11/2003 21:27

I'm in a dilemma with this too, Beccarollo. I was using Mothercare angled variflow teats which fitted on Avent bottles and were the ONLY ones my bf daughter took to. But they've phased them out and I'm down to my last couple.

People mentioning Playtex and Nuk - where do you buy these from? I haven't seen either anywhere.

popsycal · 11/11/2003 21:29

muk - from superdrug and spare teats also from tesco
my niece will only drink from nuk teats

popsycal · 11/11/2003 21:30

that'd be nuk not mk!!! LOL

popsycal · 11/11/2003 21:31

..or MUK even

I used the Avent wide necked bottles with orthodontist variable flow teats, after having a go with some Mothercare and Babies R Us ones. Much preferred the Avent and used them from about 4 weeks, whilst mixed feeding. DD had no problems at all.

janh · 11/11/2003 22:03

Evita, I used to get Playtex from a local independent chemist (this was 7-8 years ago). Have seen them on the internet recently though.

This site does mail order. This one does internet shopping.

This site has a bottle feeding buying guide.

(I googled "Playtex bottles" for these.)

Marina · 12/11/2003 20:18

Janh, THANK YOU. Just saved me a windswept two mile stroll (no bus between me and target pharmacy) in search of the elusive Playtex kit.

janh · 12/11/2003 20:36

You're welcome, Marina! Hope they come quickly.

Demented · 12/11/2003 21:20

DS1 liked Maws with the Variflow teat and DS2 liked Avent but soon refused milk from anything other than a breast.

codswallop · 12/11/2003 21:24

Br its the breast thing. I gave C some cows milk first and he liked that.. he refused till ? 5months then would take it. Now on 2 a day

Angeliz · 12/11/2003 21:25

i liked basically any bottle but with Boots own fast floe teats......(they don't fit with Avent bottles though!)
