14.5 month old wouldn't latch this morning...any ideas?

He has a preferred side (my right) and he always gets fed from that side at night. However in the morning I feed from the left side first, and then the right.

Did same thing this morning and all was normal on the left - latched on without trying (at 14.5 months just have to point it in the right direction !)and fed for the usual 2 or 3 minutes before coming off.

Swopped to the other side, he went to latch on, then didn't. He started to get upset, so I tried again, positioning my boob a little to make it easier. He went to latch and then again stopped. At this point he was getting increasingly agitated. So I sat him up gave him a cuddle and tried to calm him down a little. We then tried again, but he just got more and more inconsolable.

DH comes into the room and manages to calm him down a little. We decided to give him some teething powders and some ibuprofen in case it was his teeth causing the problems (only has bottom 2 front teeth so he is teething :( )

We left it for about 20 minutes to let the powders/ibuprofen start to work their magic and tried again...but with the same response.

Now my question is, do you think that it is just teething or is this his way of telling me that the end is nigh for bf'ing

Will see how things go tonight, but just wanted to see if anyone else had any idea's suggestions.

Could it be earache?

It's not weaning though as if it was he would be at least a good year older and disinterested in bfing, not inconsolable at not being able to bf.

It might be the start of a nursing strike or it might have been a one off. How has he been today with bfing?

Only feed morning & night and he wouldn't feed from me again. He never took to bottles, but downed about 6 oz cows milk, then went to sleep

It might be a nursing strike - lots of info on them here. They can go on for a while (DD1 & DD2 did a two week strike together once Hmm) but it might not last as long as that.

Is there any signs he is unwell at all? If it is teething and you feed at predictable times you could try teething gel/powders/whatever normally works a little time before nursing to see if that helps?

Thanks for your help TruthSweet I'll have a look at the nursing strike info.

He has fed this morning as normal, if for not quite as long so and he seemed quite happy so it might justhave been one of those things.
