Please help - inflamed breast but milk not coming out

Hi, DD2 is 3mo and bf has been going well. The last day or so she's seemed keener on one side than the other so this afternoon I gave her three feeds out of four from the one she doesn't prefer.

Suddenly at dinner time I started feeling all shivery and my boob developed six or seven very sore, tender points. I expressed a bit of milk off, massaged the breast and applied a nappy filled with hot water to it. When she was ready for bed I then fed her again from that side for 45m (she usually feeds for 20m tops).

It seemed to help for a while but now the boob is hurting again and I feel awful. Have pumped for over 5m but literally only a few drops came out, hand expressing is very painful and nothing is coming out, gently massaging the breast doesn't produce anything either.

She doesn't often feed in the night (normally a winner!) so I am planning to pump every few hours and to give her a night feed anyway.

What else can I do to get milk out of my bad boob?

I am also now wondering if she gets much herself from this side and perhaps I need to work on the supply as she's gone off it because it's hard work?

Am desperate Sad

you could try a hot bath/shower and hand express?

HumphreyCobbler · 04/01/2012 21:21

also phone up a helpline or NHS direct. I had antibiotics.

Thanks humphrey - will call Dr first thing and see what they say. Am so tired, will try shower to wake me up as well! How long do the ABs take before helping?

not long at all. You should take some painkillers for your pain and fever - I think I took co-codomol that I had left over from my section.

mastitis

Fleecy · 04/01/2012 22:04

Thanks sassy - appreciate you coming over Smile

Am currently sitting with hot nappy on my boob and am about to shower, express again then get some sleep so I can wake DD to feed later. Ibuprofen with me. Drs in the morning I think...

Thanks to both of you. Keep your fingers crossed!

Do hope you feel better soon.

i know this is painful but continue to feed from your bad boob as it will free whatever blockage is there (babies are brill at this) go braless and topless so nothing is rubbing against your boob and express in the bath

Fleecy · 05/01/2012 21:44

Just to let you know, after a long and painful night, a long hot shower, a good sleep this morning (DD and me!) and a braless day my milk is starting to flow again now. Boob still red and sore but I no longer feel fluey and I can now feel my milk letting down a bit when DD feeds from the bad side.

We're not 100% but I'm confident we'll be back to normal by the end of tomorrow. Thanks for all your advice.

When I had a blocked duct which was threatening to become mastitis, HV told me to heat before feeding / expressing and then cool after. Preferably cool with fridge cold savoy cabbage leaves.

Totally worked! Although cabbage boob was an unfortunate nickname for a few days. Grin
