Alcohol in breast milk - NY treat!

Thinking I may go crazy tonight and have, Oooh, 2 glasses of wine or something similarly wild. Maybe a gin and tonic. Mmmmm. Anyway, who can tell me how long this is likely to stay in breast milk. If I pump and dump instead of feeding at 11ish and use milk from the freezer, will I then be ok in middle of night if Dd2 wakes at 2 or 3? Or shd I do the same again? Presumably it'll all be fine by the am?

oh just feed the baby, its fine - honest!

you'd have to drink a few bottles to actually harm your baby

Happy New Year!

I think it takes as long to go through your system as it does if you are considering Driving (ie a unit an hour). So depends how big your drinks are .. So maybe ok by 2/3am but certainly if not large drinks, i would have thought morning is ok. Enjoy your nye Smile

You don't need to dump if you're only having a little. I think the NCT rule of thumb is if you're ok to drive you're ok to breast feed.

stripygiraffe · 31/12/2011 18:41

I was told if you're safe to drive then you're safe to feed. It's one night - just use milk from the freezer! Have fun and remember you are likely to be a major lightweight Grin

How old is DD, by the by?

stripygiraffe · 31/12/2011 18:42

Btw - your title makes it sound a bit like the alcohol in the breast milk is a NY treat for your baby! Wink

banana87 · 31/12/2011 18:54

I think it takes 1 hour per unit to clear from your milk.

Thanks all. She's just 5 weeks and is being quite reflux-y and sick, which is why I'm being overly cautious. But as I managed all of about 10 days between finishing bf'ing DD1 and getting pregnant with DD2, I'm going to be such a lightweight that I suspect I'll only manage one glass anyway, so this is probably all quite theoretical! Happy New Year to you all, hope you have fun evenings!

Ps stripygiraffe Grin hadn't thought of it that way!

No need to pump and dump; it's not stored in milk, it leaves your milk at the same time as it leaves your blood.
