DS2 is 8 weeks old and ebf. Since about 2 weeks old he has become progressively more unsettled in the early hours (2am onwards) after 3 or 4 hours of quiet sleep. He thrashes around, hiccups, sounds very snuffly and only with a lot of moses basket jiggling can we sometimes get him back to sleep but often he ends up only finally settling on my chest which means not much sleep for me.
During the day he is never particularly content and may sit in his bouncy chair for about 10 mins but then cries. He does have episodes of really pained screaming but not every day and possibly these are becoming less frequent, it's more just that he looks uncomfortable, is very windy, swallows a lot, snuffles, writhes and claws at my chest when being held.
Feeding was quite tortuous in the first few weeks as he would often come off after a few sucks, scream, go back on again, gulp a lot of air, repeat ad nauseam. However I think this is getting better and feeding isn't quite the horrible experience it was. He seems to be gaining weight ok, has plenty of wet and dirty nappies so am not too worried about that but it's more the issue of how uncomfortable he seems to be and the fact that his sleep is getting worse. He can be happy lying on his back on the baby gym etc for a few mins so that doesn't fit with bad reflux does it?
I have discussed with the health visitor and got a prescription of gaviscon but am a bit undecided about whether it's worth going down this route as I just can't imagine getting the right amount of gaviscon into him and from what I've read the side effects might cause more problems anyhow.
So my guess is that he might have mild silent reflux; it's certainly nowhere near as bad as others' accounts I've read, but am I over medicalising this and he's just a normal little baby with gurgly guts and a crap sleeping pattern and is going to miraculously improve at 12 weeks (which is obviously what I'm holding out for...).
What do others think? Is it worth trying the gavison, maybe just at night? Any similar experiences? I know this isn't strictly a feeding issue but it seemed the most appropriate topic to post in. Thank you!
