10mo DS gagging on nipple, it's not letdown - what is it?

As thread title says, he is gagging literally when put to my nipple. I know it isn't an overactive letdown as we are well established with bf and it is actually before letdown that this happens. He is fine with other food at the moment, although has been off his solids since Monday when he started with a bit of a feverish bug. Temperature has been fine last couple of days but initially when he started the bug he had trouble bf due to nasal congestion, although has been able to feed effectively when he actually latches on - rather than gagging - over the last day or so.

All week he has been gagging when put to the nipple, or in severe cases has actually vomited RIVERS of puke after a long feed. I can tell he wants to breastfeed (he has been exclusively bf since birth, apart from a few bottles in the first couple of weeks he has never taken one and never shown any problems bf), I just don't get why it is making him sick.

I haven't eaten anything out of the ordinary. He has always tolerated spicy food, dairy, orange juice, through my bm, absolutely fine. I can't think of anything that would be causing this. DH has tasted my bm and said it tastes normal. Could he have developed an allergy to something (eg, dairy) only recently?

Anyone have any other ideas?

My 8.5mo dd did this a bit last week, she too had a bug and I think the problem was mucus running down her throat and making her gag. She did it with solids too. Now she's sounding less 'chesty', she's stopped gagging.

That makes sense, thanks for replying. Hope your DD feels better now, DS is certainly improving but still a bit gaggy. Hopefully it will clear soon.
