EBF, at least 6 dirty nappies per 24 hours: is this "normal"?

Ds is two months and EBF. He feeds loads and is gaining weight very well. He also has at least 6 dirty nappies per 24 hours, often 8.

I didn't think anything of it until talking to my friend who also has a 2 month old, although he is mixed breast and bottle fed. Her baby has a dirty nappy once every 4 days Confused

I then remembered reading that ebf babies often don't have many dirty nappies as breast milk is so efficient. So, does this mean we have a problem? Is he overeating? (my permanent question which I've already had answered on MN but I do still worry...)

Thanks

I think we had about 10 a day, we got through 16-20 nappies a day to start with. Normal. It's the the opposite of what you said - BF babies often have runnier poos and more frequent poos than bottle fed babies who can get constipated - esp if you aren't really careful about how concentrated the formula is.

Pancakeflipper · 24/11/2011 12:27

If I remember when mine were breastfeed every nappy had poo in it for the first few months. As Gourd says breast fed babies have runnier more frequent poos.

Some bf babies poo constantly, some save it up for a week and then do a massive one. Both extremes and anything inbetween is normal. I think what is confusing you is that bf babies can go for a week or more without a poo no problem, that doesn't mean they all do!

my breastfed DS pooed all the time, it's fine

my son did 10 most days for the first couple of months!

RitaMorgan · 24/11/2011 16:17

Anything from 10 a day to 1 every 10 days seems normal.

I am jealous of all these people with weekly poo-ers though, ds pooed at every feed for months Grin

mousymouse · 24/11/2011 16:21

sounds fine, it will slow down around 3month, be ready for poo-explosions up to the neck :o

ALotToTakeIn · 24/11/2011 19:49

My DD poos with every feed and a few in between and every time she coughs or sneezes!

NigellaLawless · 24/11/2011 21:46

DS pooed quite spectacularly at every feed (and boy did he feed) for the first 6 weeks. These poos were complete with comedy sound effects and could not be missed! He now poos once or sometimes twice a day and they have become silent stealth poos which can strike at any time of the day or night, so you never know that he needs changing until he starts to cry about it.

I prefered it when you heard them coming! Wink

Bartimaeus · 25/11/2011 11:27
Grin at first you never heard them coming (or smelt them) but now we've changed nappy brand and they suddenly stink (we're changing back again once we've finished the packet!) and boy can you hear them coming! Complete with crying just before (think his tummy hurts) and satisfied grunt afterwards Grin

The other day DH was in a waiting room with DS and DS let a couple of HUGE farts rip. One man turned round and grinned at DH, who didn't know where to look!

Ds2 was like this, at least 8/9 dirty nappies a day.
I was really worried as Ds1 had been an every other day (and then cover his back) kind of baby.

HV said not to worry.

Graciescotland · 25/11/2011 12:24

DS was the same, one memorable afternoon he managed to get through 8 in 3 hours plus six changes of clothing! He is now a once a day boy though (15 mo).
