Hello everyone - my sister has been breastfeeding exclusively since baby born at 8lbs 8oz on dec 19 but he is still only 8lbs and has actually lost weight in last few days. Midwife says not enough milk - but she can express really easily - 4oz in 10 mins. Also, baby filling nappies and has milk in mouth after feeding. But he is feeding for up to 90 mins at a time and still hungry. Sister exhausted and midwife threatening formula next visit. But what if doesn't gain with formula - then have given up breastfeeding for nothing. Is all breastmilk same in calorie/nutrient terms? Am struggling to help her as my two girls have both doubled birthweight before 10 weeks with exclusive breastfeeding. Any advice/thoughts/experience much appreciated. xxxx

good point - will get her to check guthrie results back and ok. jaundice isn't severe - but certainly there.

agree - this doesn't sound right. Persistent jaundice, not gaining weight despite lots of milk.

good-oh!

also maybe gently check who saw her at hosp - paed consultant? paed registrar? paed SHO through a&e?

You see my point...

I had exactly the same situation with my DS when he was born almost 10 years ago.

He was constantly feeding and losing weight but he was drinking as i was empty after each feed.

The HV threatened me with "i will come to your house every day and weigh him and try him on a bottle of formula

I walked out of the health centre in tears and i met one of my mums friends who told me that the same thing had happened to her baby years ago and she perservered.

My DS was jaundice also but they didnt seem to think it was anything to worry about, i persereved and eventually he did put on weight.

Not saying at all that this is the same situation with your sister but just thought id let you know of my experience.

lisa, thanks for the update.

This baby is not out of the woods at all vis a vis feeding.

He shouldn't still be jaundiced at this age (unless it's breastfeeding jaundice which is harmless but should be monitored) . He should be gaining weight - no two ways about it. What about wees and poos?

I'd be wanting to know if she is doing skin to skin and bf effectively (latch check) and how the baby is behaving.

This should be happening alongside any supplementing with formula or EBM.

Hope things work out.
