Honestly truly, if your child is an average to good eater then there is NO purpose to formula, they will be getting all the vitamins and minerals they need from cows milk plus a balanced diet.

Now, I have a friend who has a child who has alot of food restrictions due to allergies and I too would be using follow on milk / added vitamins of some sort if we were in that situation.

That is reassuring. And exactly what I wanted to hear. Thank you.

Have they had cows milk before? I'd gradually switch just to make sure they're ok with it.

cows milk - much cheaper and easier!

If your baby is a year old or not far off and eats a well balanced diet then just finish up the tin of formula you have left but don't waste your money on any more. About a pint of cows milk is what most 1 year olds need. Included in that pint is other dairy servings like cheese or yoghurts though.

Vitamins are recommended once you move on from formula. See [[http://www.healthystart.nhs.uk/food-and-health-tips/vitamins/ here].

oops, see here I should say

As everyone else says, if you child has a varied diet, then cow's milk is absolutely adequate.

To my mind, follow-on formula was invented as a way of getting around the advertising restrictions on formula for under 1s, and is marketed to anxious parents who worry their child isn't getting everything they need.

I fell for it hook, line and sinker myself with DS but had wised up by the time DD came along.
