Drinking whilst breast feeding, how old was your DC?

dribbleface · 03/11/2011 16:02

Ok at risk of sounding like i have a problem.......when did you first drink when breast feeding? DS2 is 4 weeks, feeds every 3 hours or so. Feel bad doing it whilst he is so little so have not had a drink at all.

I am not suggesting a massive drinking session (would floor me anyhow after not drinking since January) but fancy half a lager or a small glass if wine at some point in the future.

What the general view?

I got all worked up about bfing ds and a bfc actually suggested a glass of wine a night might chill me out a bit. That was after I'd been to a wedding when ds was 6 weeks old and I'd not only managed to feed him properly for the first time but also to express 10oz in the morning Shock. she said it was because the wine had relaxed me a bit. Made all the difference.

So I say it's never too early to start having a glass of wine in the evening when you're bfing :o

fatbottomgirl · 03/11/2011 16:09

I agree with headfairy enjoy Grin Wine

dribbleface · 03/11/2011 16:12

DS1 - 5 days (christmas day, 1 glass) DS2 I have no idea DD I was teetotal til she was year (other reasons, not BF)

whathellcall · 03/11/2011 16:26

My first drink was a glass of wine with Christmas dinner, DS was 6 weeks old. I now regularly have 1-2 glasses of vino on a fri night, relax and enjoy Wine.

headfairy · 03/11/2011 16:48

don't feel guilty, it's positively good for you - well red wine is anyway. And as they always say a happy mummy = a happy baby :)

worldgonecrazy · 03/11/2011 17:02

Day 2 or 3? Can't remember but I hadn't wanted a drink before that. I was also advised that a small glass of wine is one of the best things that mums can have to help them get through the early problems. It helps you relax, makes you feel grown up and less of a milk machine.

WoTmania · 03/11/2011 17:02

headfairy - that's the only time I've seen that phrase in a context that doesn't make my teeth itch

headfairy · 03/11/2011 17:30

:o maybe it should be a tipsy mummy = happy baby :o

CrazyAlien06 · 03/11/2011 20:23

About a week for me! And sometimes I can't time it right lol.DD is feeding on average every 2hrs @ 5 wks old.but occasionally she catches me out and wants more after I've just had a tipple! But it's done her no harm.

Have expressed for my first night out next week for DH to feed her and then will probably be formula the following day all depend how much I can express in this last week before the big night out!

nannyl · 03/11/2011 20:33

she was born at 2237, i has a small glass of wine at about 1930 the following day, so about 21 hours old!

AngelDog · 03/11/2011 21:04

Kellymom has some good info.

BertieBotts · 03/11/2011 21:06

Not until 8 weeks, was co sleeping though. Breastfeeding + alcohol is fine, just don't get so drunk that you'd fall asleep doing night feeds :)

dribbleface · 03/11/2011 21:18

thanks all. he generally has a long stretch from 8 till about 2am so might have a drink after 8pm feed.

We got the champagne out within the first hour:)

BartletForAmerica · 04/11/2011 12:38

No problem at all!

Bearcrumble · 04/11/2011 13:40

I had a glass of champagne when I got home from hospital. He would have been 37 weeks gestation at that point so essentially 3 weeks before he was due!

MedicalEd · 04/11/2011 14:43

I sometimes have a drink while feeding as read that alcohol doesn't peak in your system for 30/90 mins later - when DD would have finished anyway.
Either that or just after she has fed and I won't be feeding again for a while.
I think I had my first drink when she was 2/3 months though - it all tasted funny.

legallyblond · 04/11/2011 16:43

Have a drink! I first had a drink on the night I got home from hospital... I actually drank the glass of wine while bf!!!

My mother is a LLL breast feeding adviser and bf all four of us until we were 2... her rule, that I happily stick to, is that if you're ok to drive, you're ok to bf... so I think a couple of small glasses is fine!

golemmings · 04/11/2011 18:29

I was anaemic after having dd and discussed with the midwife the pros and cons of iron tablets vs Guinness. I refused tablets so for medicinal reasons I started drinking the day we were discharged I.e. at 3 days.

I did feel guilty the night I was on the phone to a friend, phone in one hand, g&t in the other and dd balanced precariously on my lap sorting herself out with supper.

dribbleface · 04/11/2011 20:54

well sat down beer in hand and ds decided to have a feeding fest so beer untouched. maybe tomorrow!

well having read this I'm buggered.

DS was born at 5.44am yest and bf got off to a good start but I felt he wasn't taking a lot and kept crying while I was trying to feed. Talked to MW today and she suggested stripping him and having skin to skin to feed. Tried this about 10pm tonight and had a really good feed, best yet, he was calm, I was relaxed.

Now I realise that all of this was because I had a glass of champagne at about 8.30 Blush

WIBU to use any baby money given to us to buy more bottles of champagne, as obviously it'll be for his benefit Grin

kickingking · 05/11/2011 09:47

Um, about a week? Blush

It was a weak White wine spritzer, though.
