Gaviscon for bf baby. How to get best results?

Hi I know people do it differently. Have been mixing 1 sachet so far as per instructions on packet and giving via syringe after feed. She should have two sachets really as she's over 10lb but I wa being tight as I was paying for it.
Anyway, how do you find it works best? I'd really appreciate some other ideas.
Dd is 9 weeks, just started with the gav-no improvement seen yet

Do you know for sure it's reflux? Have you been to gp? And is gaviscon not on prescription?

I am supposed to give my ds up to six sachets a day, imo this is too much, it makes him grizzly. He is way over 10lb too, So we give him 5mm after each big feed and none after top ups. This works for us.

Yep long, long story it's reflux my gp is a moron. Finally got prescription this morning for 30 sachets (thanks!) I started buying it last week to see if it actually made any difference. Other threads:
'Please help dd is clearly in so much pain' and 'oversupply things havent improved'

Viva so is that 1 sachet of powder dissolved in 5ml?? I have so far been giving her 1 sachet twice a day as six times seemed loads. But didn't know if it needs to sort of build up or is instant relief then it is gone by the next feed

We saw an improvement pretty quickly but it does take a few doses to build. My DD had a sachet at every feed so 6 a day to begin with but we've reduced to 3 a day now as she's much much better. I found easiest way was to mix it with 1/2 oz of EBM in a bottle and give before the feed, that way she was hungry so definitely took it. She will sometimes take it in cooled boiled water which is obviously easier when you're out and about or in the middle of the night. You don't have to faff about with mixing a paste first either just give it a really good shake.

yes - i mix the gaviscon in with 1/2 to 1oz of ebf in a bottle at the start of each feed, six times a day.i worry about mixing it with water, as i think that would effect weight gain - filling up on water and then not taking enough milk.

with bf babies, i think its hard to get them to take it at the end of a feed as they are too full and milk drunk by then. it still stops her acid and throwing up, even though we give it at the start mixed into milk.

Watch out for it making your DD constipated though! We had to stop giving it to DS (as it made him really constipated); he was subsequently prescribed ranitidine.

Good luck OP, it's really hard trying to get a proper diagnosis, and the right medication. In the end (after being prescribed an increased dose of ranitidine), we asked for a referral to a paediatrician, so remember that you have that as an option Smile.

DS is fine now btw, and his reflux is becoming a distant memory.

Oh don't even get me started. I have requested ranitidine. Response 'no you can't have it plus it would end up giving her a stomach infection'. I am so, so knackered with it all. She's 9 weeks now and only today got even gaviscon. So depressing. A friend of mine who is a gp says dd's is the worst case of reflux she's seen in a very long time. Has advised me to go to a&e tomorrow. I think I'll just get a new gp there are a few near me

Can you see a different GP at your current practice?

DS was older when he was prescribed ranitidine (~4 months; oddly, he seemed to have reflux from ~4-6/7 months only), I'm not sure if there's a reason not to prescribe it to a younger baby (Confused at stomach infection).

There are a few reflux support threads on here, which I found quite useful, but you sound pretty clued up.

I've got boxes of bloody Baby Gaviscon Grin...

Single gp practice grrr. From what I've found out I don't think there's any reason that it can't be prescribed to a young baby. I know a baby younger than dd who is on it 3 times a day. Gp just does not believe me at all and is being awkward. All he does every time is tell me to stop bfing. So annoying

Can you insist on getting referred to a paediatritian? Sounds like you need to see someone who will take you seriously. You can tell your idiot GP that BFing is the best thing you can be doing as breast milk not only has properties that have showed it to reduce the amount of acid reflux but also is digested faster and so has less time to flow back up baby's esophagus (sp?). God it annoys me when they treat you like a neurotic mother when all you're doing is simply and instinctively responding to your baby's pain Angry

No, That's the sachet made up as instructed, we just give 5mm from the syringe and discard the rest.
