Blister on nipple - shall I buy a pump ASAP?

My DD is 6 days old and I've been breastfeeding. Initially, it was quite painful - even though the hospital midwives said the latch was good - but things seem to be going ok now (with decent no of wet/dirty nappies) altho my nipples are still a bit sore (but copeable).

But, there seems to blister forming on one nipple which is painful to touch. Do you think I should buy a breast pump now before/ just in case things get more painful? I will prob be looking to a pump eventually anyway to give DD expressed milk.

I'm hoping to go to a BF support group this week. But if anyone can offer any other advice, I would really appreciate it.

i would recomend you speck to a BF counciler about your latch. Pumping doesn't always help as the nipple can rub in breast shild.

If the latch is sorted then the nipple will heal well while still BF.

Hi, I had a blister in the early days and it was bloody painfull so you have my sympathy. I actually found the breast pump hurt more than actually feeding DD and in all honesty it didn't take long to clear up so hopefully it wont be there long x

I had this at about four weeks, I got a pump, and expressed only, no breastfeeding, for four days. It cleared up my cracks and blisters and BFing improved considerably for me after that. Good luck.

Thx MigGril, I already have the NCT BFC details from when I did the NCT course. I will def give them a ring tomorrow. I think it is a latching problem. DD latches ok on right but not so great on left.

I'll see how I get on in the next day or so....

This BFing business is quite hard!

One of our supports like's BF to learning to drive a car. If you had never seen anyone drive before it would be very hard to learn. But once you get the hang of it, it's like seconed nature and you don't even think about what you are doing.
