Hands up who warms their bottles in the microwave?

If you have premade your bottle and put it in the fridge do you warm it in the microwave? I know you're not meant to because it doesn't warm it evenly but niether does a bottle warmer.
If you do use the microwave, how long do you warm it for?

We used a microwave for dd's milk. Cows milk, though, not formula. Gave it 30 secs and then a good shake. I fail to see how it's possible for there to be hot spots in a liquid which has been shaken.

Not sure if there are issues in reheating formula though.

I warm mine in a microwave from about 8 weeks or so, I pop it in for 40 secs in our one.

BigBadBear · 27/09/2011 14:35

I did (youngest DD is 20 months so not on bottles anymore). But I didn't make up bottles in full - I used to sterilise the bottles then leave them with the boiled and cooled water in on the kitchen worktop (obviously with lids on) and add the milk powder and microwave (5secs per oz) when needed. A good shake and I never had a problem. Once on cow's milk, I didn't bother heating it and they never complained!

But someone will be along to say that it shouldn't be done like this, you know...

I do with cows milk. 1 minute is about right for an 8 oz bottle. Shake well, no probs.

Formula, I make up fresh.

Guilty as charged. I heat it for about 20 seconds and give it a good shake to distribute the heat. I then squirt a bit on my wrist to double check it isn't too hot

buttonmoon78 · 27/09/2011 19:55

My name is buttonmoon and I use a microwave to heat bottles

30 seconds does the trick and it's a damn sight quicker than a bottle warmer. And I already have a microwave - I don't need any more baby tat Grin

TCOB · 27/09/2011 19:59

Yessss but - cows milk only. Followed by Nevercan's technique. Is that so naughty??

HandMini · 27/09/2011 20:45

Yes, I do for expressed breast milk....

Is that terrible?

I always shake well and test on wrist, and in any case, I do it 20 mins or so before it's drunk, as I micro the bottle, then do bath and change, then bottle before bed.

Isn't the danger "hot spots" forming within the milk?

eightyone · 28/09/2011 04:45

As I recall there is more than just the 'hot spots' problem when it comes to microwaving breast milk. It destroys the composition of the milk (vitamins/immune properties) , there is lots about this if you google it.
