Oh b*******er I think I've got mastitis.

Left nipple got a bit mangled by teething dd so suspect I've been unconsciously avoiding feeding on that side. Now feel engorged, very, very lumpy, super-tender and sore plus shivery, nauseous and have backache. It's mastitis isn't it and I need antibiotics. Oh bum.

Argh. Aloha you have all my sympathies - it's horrid isn't it. I had it twice with ds1 (fortunately never did with ds2). The first time round I left it ages before seeing the doctor and was feverish and shaky, I felt much much better very quickly with the antibiotics (and I hate taking ABs normally). Second time I knew the warning signs and got me the antibiotics before it got that bad.

Try and get an emergency appt this afternoon if you can.

walkinginawinterBundleland · 15/12/2005 13:08

probably. i'd say monitor and see if red patch (have you got one?) gets bigger and temp goes up any more..last time i had similiar symptoms i had a "holding" course of ABs left at chemist by emergency doc and actually never took them as things subsided. need to do some feeding/expressing/hot/cold compress (whichever feels best) in bath if possible.the comb things works for some people too. try gently expressing by hand, worked for me last time. poor poor you, what a s**t time to get it too

thecattleareALOHing · 15/12/2005 13:18

I was shaky and shivery yesterday but didn't connect it to my poor sore bosom. Have been (very painfully) hand expressing in the bath today - dd out with her nanny. Thanks for your thoughts. Think will go down at 2pm for emergency appt. Oh bum indeed.

deffo get sorted today. or at least action plan. i had it 3 times in 10 weeks with dd1, and nearly had it with dd2, but averted it just in time. rest and get plenty of fluids and do try to feed, even though i know it's hell. huge sympathies, x

thecattleareALOHing · 15/12/2005 13:27

backache is quite severe and I'm definitely shivery.

motherinfurrierfestivehat · 15/12/2005 13:59

Hope you're at doc's now, honey. How vile. Neck down all the meds you can get, I reckon.

thecattleareALOHing · 15/12/2005 14:04

appointment at 4pm - have to get dh to leave work early to pick up ds from nursery now.

hunkermunker · 15/12/2005 14:09

Have you taken any painkillers? Take some paracetamol and ibuprofen if you haven't.

Hope you're better very soon - think the antibiotics should sort it pretty quickly.

thecattleareALOHing · 15/12/2005 14:12

I'm so SORE. Off to take some more paracetamol. Maybe a nice lemsip as a treat!

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 15/12/2005 15:07

Ibuprofen should help a bit more, if you have any, Aloha?

thecattleareALOHing · 15/12/2005 15:13

Will get some when I've been to the docs - chemist is opposite. It's bloomin painful. I've never had it before.

OP posts:
Kelly1978 · 15/12/2005 15:13

mastitis is vile, tho I've managed to avoid abs with it. Ibuprofen is better than paracetamol, as it also reduces inflamation. Hot baths can help too, sit in nice warm bath and express. Hope you feel better soon.

suedonim · 15/12/2005 16:33

Hope you're feeling better asap, Aloha. Mastitis is horrible - I remember being desperate to get some a/b's down my throat!! Ime, it responds v quickly to a/b's, within hours.

foundintransleightion · 15/12/2005 16:36

Sympathies Aloha.

hunkermunker · 15/12/2005 20:17

How did it go at the doctor, Aloha? Hope you're feeling much better very soon x x x

thecattleareALOHing · 15/12/2005 20:53

oooer, it's been a roller coaster ride this pm. Was feeling crap by the time I saw the gp who prescribed anti-bs, then I got really ill. Shivering uncontrollably (despite being in a bath with only hot water in it in a hot bathroom, and then in bed un=der the duvet and three blankets, aching all over, vomiting - the works. Oh, and an incredibly painful breast which dd had to feed off to deal with engorgement which was exquisitely painful. But suddenly the anti-bs seem to have kicked in a bit - took two at once followed by another two a few hours later to get the infection under control and I feel absolutely vile and crap BUT not like I'm going to die. Thanks all. I'm SO glad I went to the GP (who was great).

OP posts:
GeorginaA · 15/12/2005 22:19

Aloha - I remember the first time I had mastitis, when I tried to latch ds1 on to reduce the engorgement, I nearly threw him across the room in shock, it was so painful! I really sympathise!

A couple of things to be aware of: I found with the ABs that my supply appeared to reduce, so you may find your dd needs to feed more frequently for a while. Also (although I don't think this is as common), ds1 completely rejected the side that was infected a day or so later.

I actually "spoke" to Tracy Hogg about it at the time (on a live conversation online somewhere - baby whisperer site probably) and she said it was understandable as it must taste pretty horrid for the babe! So if you have a breast pump or can hire/borrow one for a while you may find it helpful just in case (although even more uncomfortable than a baby feeding, unfortunately ).

Hopefully though Tiktok will be able to give you the more accurate lowdown if she's about

hunkermunker · 15/12/2005 22:25

Oh, poor you Really glad the antibiotics seem to have kicked in - hope that you're feeling tons better by the morning.

thecattleareALOHing · 16/12/2005 10:53

Still feel quite bad. Temp went up above 101 yesterday. Exhausted and nauseous and still very sore. Hope it doesn't last much longer.
I truly take my hat off to anyone who continues to breastfeed after getting this more than once. It's horrible!

OP posts:
frogs · 16/12/2005 11:06

Poor you, mastitis really is far more outrageously horrible than anyone who hasn't had it can ever imagine. I had it five or six times with dd2, having never had it with the others. On the upside, if you've had it once the early symptoms (painful lump) are instantly recogniseable, so you can race to the drs for ABs before it has a chance to get a proper hold.

Hope you feel better soon.
