Reassurance needed on 6 week old weight gain

DD is BF. Up to now she has been putting on 8 oz a week, but this last week she only put on 2 oz despite feeding constantly, cluster feeding every evening, never going more than 2 hours without a feed day or night.

Sometimes these feeds are only 5 mins though she comes off on her own every time, she does not always look "milk drunk", but nearly always looks satisfied..

Why hasn't she put on so much? Is a 5min feed ok at 6 weeks?

Swimming - babies who are doing well don't need weekly weighing, and one reason why it is not recommended is exactly what you have described in your post: the natural fluctuations in weight will include small weight gains and this worries mothers :(

It would be highly unusual for a baby to gain 8 ounces every week over a sustained period.

Short feeds are well within normal for a clearly healthy thriving baby.

Your HV should be able to confirm all this for you.

You can see where she is on the centile chart and she may be finding 'her line' - but whatever....a 2 ounce weight gain one week after several weeks of 8 oz gain is totally expected. She does not need to be weighed more often than once every four weeks - see your red book for guidance on this :)

Yep, the red book says not to weigh more than once a month if the baby is doing well, for this very reason.

If she seems satisfied, plenty of wet/dirty nappies etc, then she's almost certainly fine.

Don't worry about it, leave it a few weeks and weigh her again then.

We are weighing weekly because she is sick a lot - a happy chucker I've been told!

Thanks for the reassurance Grin
