Breast fed baby - just had a fright, can they choke??

EBF DS, he is 6 weeks old, he has just been feeding and he took a gasp and I heard him kind of swallow air then it was as if he choked, he froze with a grimace on his face, he was making no sound or movement for what seemed like an age ( few seconds I'm sure) . I patted his back then blew in face and he took a breath. He was distressed afterwards and I am feeling worried about it. Sorry if this is a daft question but can a baby choke on milk could it have been serious? He has had less severe gags with my strong let down but this wasn't related ti that I don't think and was more like he choked. Typing from mobile so apologies for typos and grammar! TIA x

Have you got a fast let-down or oversupply? I had this problem with DD2 for the first few weeks, it has calmed down now but she did pretty much what you've just described because my milk was coming out faster than she could drink it. You might find this helpful.

Thank you for reply. Yes I've had issues with strong letdown/flow in past and used block feeding and different positioning to help, and I feel it has calmed down now and that he is more able to accommodate it. It obviously took him by suprise tonight though! It was well into the feed I think he was slowing down and getting sleepy but my supply must have still been powerful.

Hi flippy, my DS (3.5wo) also does this sometimes - I think it's because my let down is a little fast for him at times, we have a new game where he splutters a mouthful of milk all over me I read that feeding lying down with him on top of you can help, google biological nuturing - works for me & DS. :)
