Have a read of this , especially some of the comments at the end..

OP posts:

Oh, FGS - yes, being offended by breastfeeding I think is mental. You hardly see anything, it's not like you get offered a suck, etc.

Being offended by someone having a shit in public - that's dirty, right? There's a shit on the ground when they've finished, for one thing.

You cannot compare the two.

But I didn't say that finding things offensive in general was the behaviour of a mentalist. OK?

I also said that some people are offended by pregnant women. Some people are offended by black people. Should we pander to that ignorance?

It's not ignorant to be offended by someone having a shit in public. Can you see the difference?

starlover · 22/11/2005 16:48

but sometimes you do see plenty! not everyone is/wants to be discreet about it!

as i said before, i am not saying that it is right to talk to the police, or say anything to a breastfeeding mother etc etc

just that maybe we should have a little bit of respect for those who ARE offended by it.
I still fail to see how their opinions matter less than yours

starlover · 22/11/2005 16:48

they may clear their shit up when they finish.

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 22/11/2005 16:50

You see more flesh bobbing up and down during the summer months than you do when a mother is b/fing. Sorry SL, think you are totally wrong here.

expatinscotland · 22/11/2005 16:50

I still don't see how the effects of binge drinking continue to be publicly acceptable, but breastfeeding is not. I'd much rather pass a mother breastfeeding that dodge vomit, urine and pools of blood commonly on hte pavement on Sunday morning.

starlover · 22/11/2005 16:51

wrong about what? about saying that other people may have differing opinions to you?

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 22/11/2005 16:53

No, wrong that we should put up with ignorance. You could say that racism is a difference of opinion couldn't you? Where do you draw the line?

hunkermunker · 22/11/2005 16:56

SL, now you're being absurd.

Any comment on people being offended by pregnant women or black people, btw? Should we respect those opinions too?

starlover · 22/11/2005 16:59

but i don't necesasrily think it's ignorance.... not in all cases anyway.

just makes some people uncomfortable, especially if they aren't used to it.
i used to get uncomfortable seeing it, didn't know where to look! that's all changed since having ds and having various people poking my boobs around though! lol

but i would have been really upset for people to call me ignorant or mentalist or anything els just because i didn't like watching someone breastfeed!

flamesparrow · 22/11/2005 17:01

You don't have to watch anyone breastfeed though - just like you don't have to watch what people are doing at the next table in a restaurant, or what game a mum is playing with her child in the park.

If you are offended/uncomfortable, then look away.

flamesparrow · 22/11/2005 17:02

Teenagers eating eachother in front of me is something I'd rather not see, so I look away...

starlover · 22/11/2005 17:02

depends on the time/place..
.i agree in most instances if you don't like it you can move/leave.. but not always.

starlover · 22/11/2005 17:04

but that's my point you know? we're all offended by things... aren't we?

drunken yobs, teenagers eating each other... etc etc

doesn't make us bad people though does it. why can't we accept that some people just don't like breastfeeding?

flamesparrow · 22/11/2005 17:04

You don't even have to move - just turn your head slightly.

Where exactly is a place where you can't do that?

flamesparrow · 22/11/2005 17:05

Not liking something is one thing, but being vocal about it and wanting people moved is another.

People can be as racist or homophobic as they like, as long as they keep quiet about it.

weesaidie · 22/11/2005 17:06

Agree with HM here, you cannot say that just because someone is offended/has a different opinion that it is ok!

I might say, oh I am offended by fat people... they should stay indoors but I would never say that... nor do I think people should be offended by breastfeeding.

starlover · 22/11/2005 17:06

yeah it's really nice sitting eating a meal with your head turned to one side and not being able to move isn't it?

that's not even the point though.. is it?
read my last post... think i've said all i need to say.

there is no point me carrying on just so you can all shout me down.

weesaidie · 22/11/2005 17:07

{not offended by fat people by the way!)

But I don't think opinions should just be accepted, otherwise women wouldn't have the vote, we would still have slaves, etc.

starlover · 22/11/2005 17:08

BUT WHAT IS WRONG WITH DISLIKING BREASTFEEDING?

fgs.. it doesn't hurt any of you!

for the millionth time.. NO i don't think it's ok to ask someone to move or to tell the police or to make someone stop breastfeeding..

But I do think it's ok for people to not like watching it!

good grief, you all blow everything out of all proportion... get a sense of perspective here¬!

wenceslaligo · 22/11/2005 17:08

oh fgs, no of course people who don't want to watch bf should have no sympathy. all they are thinking about is their own prudishness when if they had any compassion they'd be thinking about a baby that needs food. bf leaves no trace, unlike vomiting, shitting etc etc, and if you don't like it you don't have to look do you.

starlover · 22/11/2005 17:08

i have never said that ALL opinions should be accepted.

weesaidie · 22/11/2005 17:09

Also I don't think drunken yobs and so on is a fair comparison.

Breastfeeders are doing something natural that is best for them and their child... and trying to have a life.

It's not as simple as different opinions IMO!

flamesparrow · 22/11/2005 17:09

Made it to 35 posts before I joined in....

I need to cut off my fingers....

weesaidie · 22/11/2005 17:09

We are blowing it out of proportion? Uh-huh.

starlover · 22/11/2005 17:10

well if you read the whole thread i wasn'tthe oen that brought up drunken yobs.. they were examples given by other people that i then used
