I put this thread on Pregnancy and then thought it might be better here so hope someone can help.

Just a bit of history to explain my question: I had various breast problems with first baby (blood leaking from one nipple from 4-5 months in pregnancy; spend first 10 days pumping out blood from that side, then had mastitus (sp?) which turned into a breast abscess. In the meantime, not enough milk from other side, baby losing weight, had to go onto mixed feeding). Anyway, despite the problems I did mixed feeding for 15 months and after the first few months it all settled down and was great.

Obviously, I would like to b/f again since it did basically work well last time (eventually). I feel fairly set up to counter any similar problems to last time once baby is born. My problem is that I am only 13 weeks pregnant and the "problem breast" has started to feel very uncomfortable and to ooze (sorry!) slightly from near where the abscess site was.

I really don't want to take antibiotics while pregnant and would very much like to know whether any other mums have had this problem second time round after an abscess and, if so, what did they do? Also, if I ignore the problem and do have a bit of an infection in my breast, can it in anyway affect the baby I'm carrying?

Grateful for any thoughts. Thanks.

HAve you been to the doctor or spoken to your midwife about it? Did they tell you why there was blood there?

No, Jellyjelly, they were mystified and breast scans came back clear. However, when ds was born in May (2003) the breastfeeding midwife at the hospital said I was the 9th case she had seen that year so she seems to have seen it but not the doctors!
