Any no no foods when breastfeeding?

I'm having dd tomo by elcs and want to BF. Are there any food you're not allowed to or not advised to eat while Breastfeeding. Sorry if I'm being dumb.

Afaik everything is fair game once you've birthed! Unless/until you find something that doesn't suit lo.

I was warned not to eat anything with green leaves to avoid colic. It worked for me and my four DC, but may have just been coincidence. Eating a lot of sweet things can (apparently) give babies a sweet tooth (?). Brewer's yeast may (or may not) help your supply of milk. I had a glass of beer in the evening after my last bf session. It seemed to stimulate the supply .

I don't think there's anything specific, unless your baby has an allergy to dairy, for example, but certain strong flavours can make their way into your milk and baby may not be keen.

You still have to be careful with medications if you're breastfeeding though.

Yes, you can eat whatever you like. There are lots of old wives tales about avoiding garlic and spicy things but there's nothing to back them up. The only things you need to have in moderation are caffeine and alcohol. The general rule of thumb is that if you're safe to drive then you're safe to BF.

Oh yeah, the caffeine thing is a biggie. I downed 2 litres of Dr Pepper one afternoon when ds1 was v small, and he didn't sleep at all until about 3 the next morning. Took me ages to twig why Stuck to one cup of coffee in the mornings after that..

Re medication yes you do have to be carefull, but hcp's are often too carefull, just saying no, rather than checking if something is suitable. Ime if you ask on here people can refer you to resources you can check yourself. They are ment to be used by hcp's but they don't seem to know they exist.

Limit caffeine and alcohol. Double check medications before using (but check yourself, don't rely on your GP to check as the BNF is overly cautious and tends to stick to manufacturers guidance not evidence). Other than that, you should be fine, unless your LO turns out to have sensitive intolerances.

When I stopped eating drinking citrus whilst bf my babies colic got so much better, so worth watching out for (gives him stomach ache at 18 months when he eats or drinks it too)

Dentists also know nothing about bfing and medication ime...

You can eat anything though.
