Hi all,

How are you? It's been a while....

I've been BFing my DD for 2 years. for the last 6 months or so it's mostly during the night and one during the day for naps (though not every day)

Yesterday I didn't feed her at all during the day. When I put her down she feel asleep on the right breast. so she didn't take the left until this morning. and then not for very long.

When I woke up I noticed that my left breast was very tender. It's sore when I put pressure on it. and feels a bit achy the rest of the time. I can still express from it and of course today is the only day EVER that she doesn't want any "buppy"

I feel ok otherwise. Not sure if it's related but I ran 5K yesterday for the Race for Life but I was wearing a really supportive bra so there wasn't a lot of jiggling.

anyway, has anyone had this at such a late stage? Feels like I should be past all this by now!

I had really bad mastitis when DS was 14 months - not quite as late, but still late (I'd only had it once before, when he was 8 weeks and slept for days after his jags, no problems after that). I think mine might have been to do with my bra rubbing too. It almost became systemic, I had to have IV antibiotics - do get it checked out if it doesn't settle.

Yes, I had one a couple of weeks ago, and I've been feeding for 5.7yrs!!

I couldn't figure out why on earth I had ended up with a blockage (and red splodges) but knew that I had to deal with it asap. Luckily both DSs were willing to oblige.

Later on, I put on my sling and realised that the day before, ds2 had been in it for a couple of hours with the chest strap pressing into exactly where the sore part of my breast was.

It could well be that your bra was doing similar yesterday?

I am presuming you know the drill for dealing with it? I was tender for a couple of days, but ibuprofen helped a good deal.

Hi mawbroon!

it's the side that I carry DD on as well so I may well be that.
I've been taking ibuprofen and putting warm cloths on it. she had a big feed before bed as well.

thanks, both of you! hopefully it'll clear up without a dr visit. don't want the whole "you're STILL feeding" thing...

xx

If I were you, I would maybe give it a massage and expressing just to make sure that the whole breast is empty. Is there any redness?

purplemonkeydishwasher · 24/05/2011 11:12

A bit of redness, a few little blotches. But not as sore as yesterday.

Did the warm diaper trick last night and that helped as well.

So hard to tell when it's empty, they don't ever feel full anymore!

purplemonkeydishwasher · 25/05/2011 07:07

Thanks for your help! x
